The series as a whole is good IMO until Ultima 7 part 2. After that I just don't like it.
Ultima Online (the MMORPG) used to be OK, but it's getting old and I haven't bothered looking at it in about 7 years.
Doesn't beat Hello Kitty Island Adventure.

Absolutely.. but earlier on when they split the shards into PvP and Non-PvP, that was about the time I stopped having interest in the game. The world was just to crowded (no open spaces anymore.. even with the housing changes..), and I didn't have any real interest in the expansions..

i would say start with 4, but use one of the mods that make it playable in todays computers... any ultima untill about 5 is unplayable on todays computers because while they are turn-based, after a certian period of time ( measured in CPU cycles ) it will assume a pass. with todays CPUs, well it can be bad. i once loaded up U3 without such program, got into the game, and before i could take action i was dead. and this was before my computer of today.
7.2 is the last one you want to play. its horribly linear but the story is awesome and proves what " world building " is about.
8 sucked donkey balls covered in donkey shit.
9 sucked so fuckin bad, it made me naseus and i almost puked.
how that for " immersion " in a game that can almost make you puke its so horrible
oblivion came close though, but not nearly as bad. i didnt have any emotional connection to oblivion other than morrowind was shitty. i guess thats a stronger reaction than ultima really... a game i had little to no connection to making me naseus.
