Ultimate Patch

First time out of the vault
:?:

1. This post relates to Fallout 2 (the version Interplay sold to me)
2. My computer has not (yet) crashed
3. I Intend to install FO2 on Win 98
4. N/A
5. I am not using any patches yet.

Basically, I want to play FO2 again. Before I install it and start playing, can you tell me:

1) Is there ONE giant patch I can get to cover all baby patches? I remember that last time I played FO2 (all those years ago) there were no children etc, it crashed everytime that snake (?) thing appeared in the desert...etc.

2)If not, which patches do I need? And are they all available from this (nma) website?

Thanks,
Paul.

The basic kit is the 1.02 patch plus the children patch, both of which are easily found in the downloads section. If you have the German version you also need the gore patch, which includes the children. Don't know what you mean about the snake thing.

The 1.05 patch is technically a mod. I think it covers the 1.02 and children patches and fixes a lot of bugs, but it also makes other changes you may not want. It may or may not contain crashy snake things.

Confirm

So it sounds to me like I'd be better of using the 1.05 patch/mod - you said it might do some things I didn't want; but so long as it fixes bugs is there anything you think it would do the I probably wouldn't want as an average gamer (well better than average)?

And just to clarify I'm not going mad:

I remember when I first started playing FO2 I would get to a point where there would be a cut-scene in the desert where a big fellow in a snake costume killed someone. I'm almost sure that's what happened and anyway it used to crash there and I had to patch the game and start again.

I think it transpired that he was a big wig later in the game? Im sure it was a sort of metal head that was shaped like a snake...actually yes....he was human underneath perhaps? Ringing any bells? Or maybe I'm getting mixed up with Stargate SG-1...

Hah! I thought you might be talking about Frank. He is kind of snakeish in appearance, although he's human in origin. You may want to read up on the Fallout Bible about that, but you'll learn about him in-game. And yes, he does play an important part in the game.

As for the patches, you might want to stick to 1.02, but 1.05 introduces some nice features. It's only drawback is that it has some changes to ammo damage which in my opinion unblances the game.

(and please only discuss the 1.05 mod in the modding forum)

I was actually about to link to post 160389, but didn't know exactly how to. I wouldn't say the ammo issue is the only drawback, though - there are plenty of large or small changes in the 1.05 mod that are completely unjustified in my mind and should have been reserved for a "1.05 extra arbitrary bonus changes add-on pack" or something. If you didn't already beat Fo2 a lot and want the "real" game, stick to 1.02 and the children patch.

Hi thanxs for your help,

I'm in the UK, I was gonna download the 1.02 UK patch and the Children's patch, but on the Children's Patch download page it says I'll need the US patch too.

Just which patches will I need (and do they all have instructions)?

That's incorrect. You should use the UK patch. You don't need much in the way of instructions, just make sure the files unpack to Fallout2/art/critters.

Hmm I use the US patch (with the child patch) rather than the UK patch. I've not had any difficulties with it and for certain aspects it works better.

Which aspects and how? I doubt it has anything to do with the children, it just means you get the US executable instead of the UK, which shouldn't make much of a difference.

It probably has to do with how "tomato" is pronounced. Or something.

I remember using the US patch on my UK version, it restaured the doc and Phyllis in Vault City's vault, non-existant in the UK release.

They are certainly there in my UK version. Bet you were just visiting during the wrong hours. Just because you can't see them it doesn't mean they can't see you.

Actually, in the UK version Phyllis isn't there, only one "Nurse Nancy".

Haven't explored her options... uh, dialogue options yet, though.

That's very odd. My UK 1.02 has Phyllis in it. Her script is called "vcnancy", so probably that was an earlier name for her (like Maggie for Rebecca or Caesar for Metzger). I can also see that the 1.02 UK patch doesn't contain a new map file for the VC vault, so if there's a Troy in my patched version, there would have been one in the unpatched as well. Furthermore, the 1.00 Phyllis is still called Phyllis on my cd.

OK, I've been doing some research and my findings are what follows:

1) I've seen the 1.00 US have Phyllis.

2) My current version has a dialogue file vcnancy.msg in it, yet the content of the file shows Phyliss'.

3) I assume that my previous version was US and the current ones I own are UK, because everytime I install, I have to bring the children in separately.

4) I remember seeing Nurse Nancy in the Vault (otherwise, how would I have known she was a Nurse?)

5) However, the file mentioned resides in the Master.dat so it couldn't have been introduced by a patch.

6) I own two different versions of Fallout 2 now (one from the Tactics pack and one from a game mag), both of them don't have children, so I assume they're UK; I'm almost certain neither is ELV. So maybe some English versions had Nancy and some had Phyllis?

7) I ust checked and the character in the Vault is RMA Phyllis, this would seem to support the findings in master.dat. Also, that I'm using the 1.05 patch doesnt seem to have any significance, since it doesn't contain any relevant scripts nor files. (?)

Well, I've just wasted 15 minutes of my time! :D

You call that wasting your time? When I update the guides I sit for hours and hours with this kind of detective work. People mail me saying, for instance, "There was a freakin' big monster in the footlocker!!!1", and I search and search in the scripts until I'm confident enough to reply and say, "There's no friggin' way there could have been a monster", and they reply, "Well, maybe there wasn't but I thought maybe there was", and then I go on to reply to a mail from some guy who says he's discovered a new quest in the Den to go get a book from someone.

And we're all very, very grateful, Per. You do Excellent work.

Somehow "Nurse Nancy" rings a bell, I wonder if it's a specific UK cultural reference...

Yay! I got mentioned!

Oh, wait.

This is well and fine, but where are the anonymous cash donations from rich Fallout fans?

Where?

To amuse you at someone else's expense, here's an email I got just the other day, with names and nationalities withheld to protect the innocent:

A dude said:
