Unknown PA Game

Pcaristotle

First time out of the vault
Please help me out, I am going crazy,

Several years ago (sometime between 2001-2004, I think closer to 2001) I was at an EBGames and I found a PC game that I had never seen before. I looked at the front and back of it and read the description and the game was so much like Fallout Tactics it was uncanny, in fact, after looking at the screenshots I determined that it had to be a clone, or maybe a game built on the same engine. I should have bought it just because, but I didn't, and now I can't remember what the game was called.

This game was a 2d isometric post apocalyptic strategy/tactics game (but it wasn't Fot)..

Does anyone know of such a game. I can't find a good list of post apolyptic pc games anywhere. I've looked at some of the ones that have been mentioned on this forum and the closest thing I can find is Metalheart, but the picture of the front of the box doesn't ring a bell. If I could see a picture of the back of the box I might be able to identify it.

Anyone have an idea what game I saw?

Thanks

I don't know the name of it, but I saw game made by Russian developers that matches your description. I'm sure it was mentioned in the news section a while back.

Hmm. Wait, there *was* a game being made by some Australians or Canadians, about some global conspiracy and aliens in a semi-PA world. Can't remember the name, though.

While checking out abandonware sites I stumbled over M.A.X. 2,it has some Fallouty over its cover I think (unfortunately I couldn't find a cover with only 2,so this collection of 1 and 2 is the best I can do) :

Here's more info on the games:

Here's some info on the first of the series, with screens and also a download link:

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I found the game. Continuum was right, the game I saw was "Shadow Vault".

Is it any good?

While searching I found this other site that lists a bunch of post-apocalyptic games and stuff:

@Rainstorm: I never played M.A.X. 2, but I have the original M.A.X. It only runs on windows95/98 and Dosbox doesn't work with it, but it is the best turn based strategy game ever made imo. I heard that the second game wasn't that great which is really sad.

Ah,ok,I just stumbled over it and thought the cover looked a bit FO'ish...but at least someone had the right game.(and looking at the cover it certainly looks more FO)

The people at mobygames has given it a 2.1 on a 5 grade scale...if you understand one of German or French they also have some reviews here (on the same page you'll find how the mobygames users has voted on 7 things about the game, maybe it'll be of some help) :

Thanks for the extra information Rainstorm - looks like the game isn't any good so now I'm glad that I didn't buy it.

If only BiS hadn't been shut down and TORN and Van Buren had been released...I just played through fallout 1 and 2 again and I'm itching for more of it - there just aren't any other RPG's like them...

NP at all,but remember (unless you can read German/French of course...and even if) these are just the opinions of three people and some reviewers...(and neither may have your taste)
So if you find it in some 5$ bin,you might still consider it...(unless all info you find is negative...)

Yeah,I miss BIS too...and Torn wasn't really something most on the BIS forum looked forward to back in the days...(of course it was split between camps, but overall -IIRC- there were more that were wary than positive...but I was in the FO camp,so maybe I remember wrong....)
I wasn't against it personlly,I thought it looked interesting...but when put against a FO3 there's no "Mystary" which path I would choose.
One thing I really miss with BIS is their constant appearence on the forum, they really talked to their fanbase, even when they caught flak.(like Feargus did with his infamous "miniguns would look so cool in 3D"...)

I had no idea what the scene was like back then, and I didn't know that Fallout 3 (Van Buren) was in the works until after BiS was shut down. I didn't even know how to use a forum back then :) . I did know about TORN however, and I was really looking forward to it because of SPECIAL and because Black Isle just made the best rpg's. (Fallout and Planescape:Torment are best imo). If I had a choice I definitely would have chosen Fallout 3 before TORN (I think we all would have).

Hack and slash and realtime with pause rpg's can be fun, but they are getting old because there are so many of them (However I probably will buy Silverfall when it comes out).

Oh,in that case the "mystary" thing was prob. wasted...(it was what the BIS staff was using when talking about TORN before any real info was released "It's a mystary"...)

Yes,hack'n'slash can be fun,ias long as one takes them for what they are...and not like some claim that they are RPG's.(pure action with levelling and hence some RPG elements)

What was metal heart like? It looks cool.

Is this the game where can be a cyborg and get upgrades etc.. or is that a different game I'm thinking about?
