USB scanner mishaps

Right, so I just got a small USB scanner, but I'm having trouble installing it. I got the drivers from the company site, and instructions there said install drivers before plugging in scanner, so I did. It doesn't work. Then I find a note plopping out of the manual that reads "caution: for Windows XP users, install drivers afte plugging in scanner". So I'm fucked, uninstalling the drivers doesn't work since XP reinstalls them everytime I plug in the scanner, and I can't find them in regedit. The scanner is a Packard Bell Diamond 1200 plus.

What is happening?
Are you just getting the little thing that searches for drivers in the corner of the screen, or are you getting the full-scale "found new hardware" box? If the latter is the case, then just cancel the install and do it manually. If you get the little baloon in the corner, you may have to turn off plug-and-play. (believe this is done through services.msc).

It installs the scanner just fine, detects it and everything, but when I try to scan something, it says "hadware not found" or something like that.

OK that's weird. When you open device manager, how does it show up? Does it have a little "!" or "?" next to it?

Try searching Google with the text of the error message (in quotes if neccessary) and the scanner's model number or name.

No. What I'm basically asking you is how to remove installed drivers properly, completely so that Win XP forgets its existence. I just fucked up by installing the drivers before plugging in the scanner, which I shouldn't have done.
