V13 canteens

First time out of the vault
I noticed that people in other threads keep referring to the V13 canteens as being some critical objects.

As far as I remember they only have limited use in FO2 to show people that you are from a vault and that you are searching for V13, but you can easily get by without them.

I don't remember them having any real use in FO1, but people seem to speak of them as being important.

Can anyone refresh my memory as to what they do? Have I missed some side quest because I got rid of them? I am most interested in FO1 but please speak up if you know of anything interesting in FO2 as well.
 
In FO1 the canteen can let you avoid a special encouter - dehydration. And it IS useless.
In FO2, talking with Lynette and Ed(Vic's friend outside VC) requires your canteen, or they will not believe you / be useful.

And...Yes, you CAN drop them at the beginning. Since you can never enter VC in the whole game....

Who says? Go talk to the Vice-Chancellor or whatnot along the left side of the main admin building. Fix the Gecko plant's problem, go back and tell him, and you are sitting pretty.

And...Is it possible to solve the Gecko plant's problem without entering VC? At least I was not wrong in that point....oh whatever, again sorry. :?

Or you can waltz up to her unarmored, and she thinks you are from V13... It will lead to the same speech tree as the flask

Wrongo... the HydroElectric Magnetosphere (is this it? Is this the One? :P) is not necessary... just blow up the friggin power plant, and voila, problem solved... :P

That ring a bell! But hey....since you never enter VC, you get the quest from Harold right? And once you finish it in the way he will of course not be happy....Blow it up, let him down. Well the programmers consider it solved, so it is, whatever. :wink:
