Vehicles and the Engine

It has been some time since I last wrote to this board, well here goes nothing:

Sometime ago there was some babble of vehicles and how you could run somebody over, or that you could attach bozars to your dune-buggy.. but how would it work? I mean, f1 and f2 are "bird perspective" games, and probably will f3 be too.

I know that if f3 will have that 3d modelling thingie, it will give a lot more options, like holding two weapons at the same time(they could have done that in f2, but it used sucky engine, if there ever was one(SPRITES!!), lazy bastards :-) )

New vehicles would be cool, i have nothing against them, so tell me, how do they work in game like fallout?

First, the only FO game so far to use vehicles was FO2 with their highwayman, and all you could do was travel across the wastes a little faster and have a smaller random encounter rate. Buying microfusion cells to refuel it was costly and it got stolen in about every town you stop in, so it wasn't of too much use.
But I supposed in FO3 that maybe a motorcycle would be handy in town, or at least a bicycle. And across the wastes, maybe riding a horse or an untamed brahmin. riding wild brahmn, now that would kick ass.

What do you mean, LITTLE? After you beat the game you can get grav plates and use up one fuel dot for a full lap around the map.

Yeah, i know that, but fallout Graphic engine just sucks, Baldurs gate was released about the same time as fallout, and it used MUCH better engine, though it was mostly ruled by sprites, they were very goodly made, altough i found some shields and swords to shine through everything else at the right angle. D2 uses(at my oppinion) just the same engine, you can't tell any diffrences between these two games.

Problem with fallout GE was that every goddamn dude(critter, npc, whatever) was a "all picture"(meaning that everyone and everything must have it's own full size picture, it takes a lot size if, for example your own character: about 7 armour, 5 weapons, 12 angles, = 7x5x12 picures and so on), but in bd and d2 those dudes were spliced into different parts(arms, chest, legs etc.)...
Conclusion: F2 GE was old when it was released, and is even older now, and i still play it.

PS: i never would believed that they could make a SPRITE look so beatiful(how do you spell this f***** word?!) in d2.

PSPS:
Probably one advantage of the sprite is it's fastness(i played d2 through 2 times with my 233mmx steam-machine, and i didn't have 3d accelerator card, beat that!).

Actually, the Fallout engine is older than Baldur's Gate's engine. It's also significantly better than the Baldur's Gate engine, IMHO because it uses isometric tiles.

Baldur's Gate uses basically a huge picture file for each location whereas Fallout 2 uses reusable titles for most everything. That makes Baldur's Gate a largely inefficient engine in terms of storage space, load times, and game speed.

Actually, you don't need all 12 angles for Fallout. You really only need four angles for the hexagonal tactics engine because you can mirror two angles. You can eliminate three angles from the isometric part of it by mirroring also. Since the north/south directions are the same for both cases, you only need seven angles.

I will agree with you that it would have been nice if the Fallout sprites were piece meal, like Diablo 2's. It would have allowed you to armor your NPCs and visibly tell what armor they're using.

Hey riding a brhamin sound nice (where can I buy a ticket? ;-) )

It would however be nice if you could get viechles with weapons ( even thou it would make the game a bit hard to ballance).
