Video Card problems

I'm currently using a Voodoo 2 and an integrated Cyberblade i7 (Yes, I know) but I decided to upgrade when I found a cheap Voodoo 3 2000 online (Yes, I know). It arrived Wednesday and I've had hellacious problems installing it. I put the card in fine and installed the software, but when I rebooted Windows wouldn't let me set the resolution above 640x480. I made sure to download new drivers from the remains of the 3dfx website, but the updated drivers didn't work either. The thing is, I can't turn off my integrated video card; I lost my motherboard manual some time ago. I was wondering if this could be causing a conflict of some kind? Anyone know? BTW, I'm using ME and my IV/V2 combo still works like it should, even after being reinstalled.

You got a Voodoo? Bleh. Well at least you didn't get an ATI...

Might try turning it off in your motherboard BIOS. If it does allow it to be turned off, it would be there. Maybe also try going into your system properties and checking on the devices (Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager). You can manually disable some devices in there.

Yeah, I've tried that. Disabling the card in Winblows doesn't help and there's no obvious BIOS setting to just turn off the video card. I emailed PineTech about it, but the last time I asked a question about the motherboard, the tech support reply only said "Is that a Pine product?" *sigh*

I don't replace vid cards, nor have i in the past, but i'm pretty sure i have the answer to your prob. Right click on My Computer > Properties then click the Performance tab. Hit the Graphics button, and there should be a slider. If i'm correct, it will be all the way to the left. To be able to get to full res, slide it all the way to the right.

And get another video card. Geforce II's aint that expensive if you look in the right place ( [link:www.pricewatch.com|www.pricewatch.com]), etc.

Sorry if this is no help, but i'm pretty sure this should solve your problem.

NOTE: if it DOESNT, i would recommend moving the slider back to the left position and call a tech support or whatever.

Man...

Why do people automatically assume those asking tech questions are idiots? It's not just this board: on every other board I've asked about this I've gotten similar answers. Judging by some of the replies, these people must think I just set the card on top of my monitor and expect it to work.

You did plug the card in right? :)

We have no indication of your technical expertise from your message. By replying with "dumb" solutions and responses we can avoid having to deal with "Hunh? What does that do?" replies because the person has no clue as to what we're telling them to do.

If you want more advanced solutions you should list what you've already tried, full details of the hardware configuration you're using, whether you understand the BIOS, system properties, device manager, how diagnostic tools work, what drivers you're using, whether you've sought tech help from boards, etc. If the question sounds advanced, you'll get advanced answers.

We're not assuming you're dumb, but when it comes to answering problems we have to assume that you know nothing.

Have you tried looking for jumpers near the video card section of your motherboard? Also, have you checked if there are any IRQ conflicts between the two cards? Maybe check under the System Devices section under the Device Mangager.

RE: the answer

You`ve got the same problem that hundreds of guys that bought a v3 replacing a v2 got, so don`t worry.

First, not only uninstall the v2 drivers but DELETE every single 3dfx related file you have on your HD (speccially ".inf" files). Then manually DELETE every single thing in your registry that has to do with voodoo or 3dfx, no matter what it is.

Reboot and you`ll see the message "windows something found a new device bla bla"; cancel if it tries to install generic windows drivers. Install yourself 3dfx 1.07.00 drivers (the last ones, there won`t be another lot) and dx7.o1a (wait a few months until you install dx8, it slows everything voodoo related).

There may be a problem, the screen turns black and you got no picture. Reboot, safe-mode and install the drivers again and again until windows puts everything in order (i know, it`s stupid, what can i say).

Everything should work fine, if it doesn`t it may be a problem with agp or with your processor so try http://www.x3dfx.com and they will help you. Hope it helped.

I'm pretty sure it's impossible to uninstall directx 8. My advice is to just do a clean win98 install. Yes, I know. You'll lose everything. But at least win98 lets you customize things instead of trying to do everything for you (and screw things up badly).

RE: Umm.... No

There`s a little utility that i have...somewhere...that uninstalls dx8; it`s called dxuninstaller (er,o.k.) and you can find it in all major shareware sites (it`s freeware).

Don`t bother though, Doyle, you problem lies in winME. There is the possibility to change the way it deals with installing drivers, but that`s not my specialaty, so i won`t go into that.

If you keep the voodoo, go to x3dfx and the guys will help you; if you find it easier to buy a new board try the geForce mx, it`s so cheap it`s almost a crime :) but be carefull, the original mx boards and the soon to be released mx400 are good, but the mx100 and mx200 are crap.

Nah, you're kidding yourself using WinME. It's such a piece of shit. It is more buggy than Win98, eats up more RAM, is less compatible with games, and assumes you're stupid.

That's why so many people are trying to buy old copies of Win98 to replace their WinME.

Even if it doesn't help your video card problem you should still switch to 98.

Also, ditch the Voodoo 3 card, sheesh, talk about archaic. 3DFx is dead might I add (good riddance). You might as well upgrade the motherboard and CPU while you're at it. You can get a fast Duron for only $55, with mhz going up by 50mhz every $5. The motherboard can cost as low as $100.
