Video Editing

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs

Just got a video camera to make movies of my son, but was curious as to what movie editing software you guys would recommend.

I just have the default Panasonic one right now, but it's a bit cumbersome. I deleted the icon for "Windows Movie Maker" a long time ago, and have no clue where it is in Windows XP.

Any suggestions?

I have no idea what's good or not, but I have tried two editing softwares. One was some XP default video editing thingie that was crap. The other was Sony Vegas Foundry, which at least I really liked (with my amateur skillz). Then again, that was 8-9 years ago, so I am sure a lot will have changed. Hence, I'd also be interested in hearing tips about this. It would be cool to have some software that's 1) really easy to understand and that encourages learning by doing rather than reading a bloated manual before you can even begin to click away, and 2) has more cool effects to add than 'star wars wipes'.

I typically use Adobe Premiere Pro. Don't let the "Pro" bit intimidate you, the program has an intuitive interface and it really doesn't take much effort to master the basics of video editing. Do note that Premiere Pro is a bit of a resource hog, but I doubt other video editing applications of similar caliber are better in that regard.

Pinnacle Studio 11 is decent, I found.

I have to disagree. I only worked with Pinnacle 8 or so, but it was horrible. It used way too much resources and was very very unstable.

Windows Movie Maker is free, you can find it at Microsoft.com, but don't expect miracles.
I would recommend Ulead Videostudio or Sony Vegas Pro.

/e adobe is ofc also very nice, but I think Ulead should have the best price/power ratio

I said decent.

It's got scene selection which is pretty accurate and the interface is easier than that of Adobe Premiere's. I doubt he wants to do professional editing so for home use, I'd say it's good.

well the version I used fucked up a major project, 20 hours of editing or something like that, gone because the software sucked. So I say Pinnacle is a no go
