video flickering in xp?

First time out of the vault
hi, im trying to play fallout 1 in windows xp on 2 different computers, and in both cases, i get similar problems.

on my desktop, its hard to explain. but um...the screen goes all black periodically, and the picture returns to certain parts as they are updated. ie, when the cursor passes over them, or i open a menu. parts that dont update just stay black until they do

on my laptop, theres a constant video flickering, lines on the screen. almost like the refresh rate is messed up or something. i cant find any way to prevent this from happening.

any ideas?
Dave

umm, oh yeah. on desktop, i have athlon xp 1700, 640mb of sdram, windows xp pro, directx 9.0c geforce 3 ti200 64mb...using fallout 1 v1.1 windows install

on laptop, i have pentium2 333mhz, 256mb sdram, windows xp pro, directx 8.1, and integrated video of the ATI variety, 8mb. fallout 1 v1.1 windows install

To the best of my knowledge neither problem has anything to do with XP. I used to get the black-screen thing all the time under 98 and ME. I'm not sure what causes it or how to fix it, but it should just go away in game if you move the screen around to refresh it all.

As to your screen flickering; I think it's got to do with the laptop; their native display resolutions are often weird and flatpanels perform progressively poorer the farther they are from their native resolution, which probably isn't what Fallout wants.

One possible solution is to go into your display settings and reduce the 3d acceleration until it stops giving you problems.

yes and no. my desktop has it's own video card, my laptop is integrated. i just checked, the laptop has a ATI Rage LT Pro AGP 2X 8MB

the laptop problem isnt so bad, its tolerable. i can deal with slight flickering. nothing i can do about native resolution, unless someones made an unofficial patch that lets me play fallout in higher res.

but the desktop one is just annoying haveing to bring up the pipboy or something every 10 seconds because i cant see my control bar thing. do you think its cause im using windows xp? or is it my hardware?
