Vista patch problem

Fallout survivor 1

First time out of the vault
Hiya,
I just got a new PC with vista on it and the good news is that Fallout 2 works! :D
The bad news is that when I try to install the UK official patch I get the following message.

"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check you're computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or an x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

I'm not that great with computers but does anyone know if there's a way around this? If not is playing without the patch all that bad?
Thanks

I have no clue, although I suspect there's a compatibility mode switch in Vista. Try left-clicking the patch, and then setting compatibility mode to Windows 98 or the like.

Failing that, just open the patch with winzip or a similar program.

Sorry for the late reply, some reason the email did'nt come. Ah well.

The version of fallout is the v1.0 UK version and I'm trying to update with the official fallout 2 UK patch.
I've tried to run the patch in all different compatibility modes available to me with the same result, and I've tried to unzip it with WinRAR which is having none of it.
I've seen some unofficial patches, do these require the official patch first and what do you think of them? (I know we're not allowed to talk about problems with the unofficial patches, but to review them is alright...I think (please don't delete me)).
Thanks for trying guys. Cheers.

I'm so sorry :(
I've just had another whack this time using WinRAR first rather than from the right click drop down menu and I've managed to install it. I've seen the new readme and my last save is invalidated so I know its there. Thanks a lot guys :D
p.s I hate vista, if your thinking about it leave it for a while for things to settle down.
