A switch is better, but you probably don't need to worry about that for a small network.
What you should install on both machines is a VNC (Virtual Network Computing) server (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/)so you can VNC between both machines. It's really nice because it is just as if you were at the other computer, only that you're on another. It's really nice if you want to connect to an X Server on your *nix box but don't want to hook up another monitor or switch cables.
