Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War

Makenshi

Ahoy, ye salty dogs!
I saw Shaihulud's topic on Company of Heroes, from THQ, and decided to ask if anyone here plays/played other great RTS from THQ: Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War, and its expansions Winter Assault and Dark Crusade.

I simply can't play unit based RTS games after playing DoW, it's squad based action is freaking amazing. After DoW, Warcraft, Age of Empires and others simply lost sense to me. Not to mention the 40k universe, which is godly cool.

if you like squad based combat so much, try Groundcontrol 1 and it's expansion.

and yeah DoW rocks, but WA is not quite as good and DC is rather boring since there are only few "scenario's" (the Tau own your ass though)

Its a good game.

DC is fun in SP and very fun in MP.
Unfortunately there is some major balance issues when it comes to MP. But a patch is coming (not one day to soon) in a few weeks they say.

If you like squad games try the Close Combat series. Not the same kind of game and not very fancy GFX, but very good gameplay.

There already is a Dawn of War thread, but it's two years old, so I'll leave this one.

I too enjoyed Dawn of War a lot, heard that WA is more of the same so I went straight to DC, tried it a bit a few weeks ago, but was playing something else at the time. I liked what I saw, tho' so I'll get back to it when I have the time.

Not mine, Assault Space Marines jumping in close and personal solves the problem real good!

I haven't gotten around to playing this yet. I'm a huge fan of RTS games so I hear I am missing out. I guess I better go pick up a copy. Is it worth getting the gold edition with the expansion?

I've played the original and most of the dawn of winter expansion. I have got past the 2nd to last level when you have to control either one side or the other. I dispise any sort of time restriction or time limit whne playing a game as I would much rather take my time and actaully get to fully explore every inch of a map. I have been bothered to play it since I relised that you are in effect against the clock because the land raider drives off by it self.

Other than that its a really cool game, really enjoyable. I read a review that said complained that you had to micro manage your army because you could upgrade your squad with more people, weapons etc... Cant say I agree with that, its incrediably easy to manage your army I thought.

Of course you could always install the latest release of the Tyranid mod

Just had a new version come out the other day.

Believe me, it's worthy every cent you're going to pay. From you avatar, I see you're a Starcraft player: there's a 99% chance you'll fall in love for the game, just like me.

Totally agreed, that part of the campaign almost ruined the Winter Assault expansion.

It's not that hard to micro, after some training. But if you don't learn to micro, then thing are gonna be bad for you in multiplayer.

My only beef with DC is how unbalanced the sides start off. The freaking Orks start very close to the stage that gives you the bonus of pre-building before attacking another map and they take it so early that by the time you finally have a sizable force to attack it, they are hunkered down and very hard to kill off. Poor Eldar and Space Marines almost never last longer then 3 or 4 rounds because all the other sides have messed up advantages and usually end up overrunning those poor bastards. The game is so good, however, that I played all 7 campaigns one after the other. The game has good balance on normal battles, you just need to find a combination of units that suit your playing style.

The balance in SP is nothing a normal player will notice. In MP there is different story. The two new races in DC, TAU and Necrons are overpowered. And Imperial Guards is the weakest of them all. But most of the imba is a consecvense of bugs and not imba. Kinda sad really.

Haven't tried it yet, but i heard it sucked. Ugly models and animations and no sounds?

going back to my younger days of playing the table top games now...

I played a little 40k but spent most of my time playing Epic 40k which is the one where you get to have whole armies on the board. anyway I had a massive Eldar army which in my opinion if used correctly could destroy the other player in a couple of turns. sure you were out numbered but you weapons made up for it.

The game was balanced quite well in that each player had a certian number of points to spend and each unit cost x number of points. Eldar and Space marines cost more than orks and imperial guard units, this allowed for the imperial guard and orks to swarm the opposing team, soemthing you cant really do in DOW.

personal best - destroy an entire chaos army except two bad guys in by the end of the second turn. Too bad I couldnt fire into melee combat for fear of friendly fire or I would have destoyed them all :) Eldar are a chaos killing machine. Though did also fairly much take apart a ork army in two turns including killing off a great gargent. Ahh the memories Eldar had a long range artillery type weapon that would automaticaly kill any unit that couldnt move out the way, they also had a couple of unit that could stop enemy units from moving... nothing beats an instant kill of the other guys top units

Hehe, don't sound like to mutch fun tho ;) To short.

I played Warhammer Fantasy tabletop some years ago. I remember one match vs a friend who was new to the game. I played High Elves and had some Bolt throwers (could shot 48" and was very deadly) Anyway if you get down 25% or more of a regiment they have to pass a panic test or flee. If they flee the unit next to them also need to take a panic test...

He had his units placed very near the table edge. So after my first turn he had like 1 regiment left of 6  The rest had fled
