Was leather armor from FO1&FO2 American Football gear?

I always thought that the leather armor set looked very similar to American Football gear, but after seeing some old stills and the image pictured below, it kind of solidified my theory that the leather armor from the first two games is salvaged old American Football gear, with maybe a few added parts.

I can't remember the exact wording since my copy has long since been lost to me, but in the original spiral-bound manual to Fallout the item description for the Leather Armor stated that it had been used as protective gear for the popular pre-war sport of Motorcycle Football. Now, the canonicity of game manual flavor text is something to be debated by the scholars, but it's there in black and white straight from the devs, so canon or not, we can be pretty sure of where they got their inspiration.

Yes, you're correct. It's a suit of armour built specifically for Motorcycle Football. Guess pre-War America decided to spice everything up.

I've been wondering how exactly this was supposed to work as a sport since 1997. Granted, the "jock" and "motorcycle" centers of my brain are both woefully underdeveloped.

When I was a kid, I tried something similar with my friends on bicycles. Suffice to say, it didn't work out well.
Never thought something like that was an actual sport.
