Wasteland transportation - sailcars?

octotron

First time out of the vault
Sailcars, windracers, dirtboats, etc. Have we discussed this before?
I read about these guys racing across the Gobi desert in Mongolia and thought hmmmm...
RaidMongolia desert race

Though rather obscure, it does have some history. Of course, you'd have to jury-rig such a thing in the wasteland, but it could be one way to cruise the old highways.
I was still a bit skeptical until I found this:
Clincher from Popular Mechanics, 1950

That's awesome! I'd love to see something like those in a Fallout game. I just hope there aren't raiders flying around taking potshots at my crew and we're too slow to fight back!

I think that some places like, say, Gecko or Broken Hills would create such sailcars. The demand for transportation must be quite big, I mean, it's not everybody that can get a old highwayman that runs on expensive Fusion Cells.

Alas, I always thought that Smitty's Highwayman was underpriced. I mean, they could kill for one of those in the pre-war times and would kill for one of those after the war, too. If I were in Smitty's place, I would't sell it for anything less than 5000 bucks.

Also, sometimes, I wonder why bycicles aren't the main transportation of the post-nuclear world. Bycicles are cheap, easy to build, find and maintain, need no fuel except for the strength of your feets and legs and are quite fast. Also, if you are good and know how to run with one, you could use a gun while using one of those, altrough I think that reloading would be hard as hell. You can also transport someone else with you, who could also serve as a gunner if needeed.

True true.

Right on, man! Very true. Im getting images of the hero pedaling hard on an undersized bicycle with sulik riding shotgun firing his SMG....
ROCKING @!!!!

But how would it work in-game? A small travel speed bonus on the world map? maybe you could use it to do drive-by's (or cycle-by's) in New Reno!?!

Maybe the lack of bicycles in the US of A?

As for Smitty's cost: what's to stop some random guy from killing him after he fixes up your car?

Great find on the sail-car though.

The U.S. doesn't lack for bicycles, it lacks for safe routes for bicycles. You can get a pretty good bike that'll get you where you want to go without too much trouble, but getting there can be kind of scary. Depending on your location.

I dunno about the U.S.A, but here in Brazil, it's pretty common for people to have bicycles. Specially those who have no money to buy a car or a motobike or if they have young sons who know how to use a bicycle. Also, here where I live (Belém), we have a saying along those lines: "If you spot two men together in a bike, run the fuck out, they're thieves." And that's usually the truth, altrough some steal alone, too. A bastard once stole me this way, damn. If the apocalypse happened, I believe that AT LEAST here, in my country, bicycles would be the vehicle of the world after doomsday.
