Weapon Attack Types

Multiple attack types for weapons
Each weapon catagory should have at least 4 or 5 attack types, though not every weapon will use all of these types. The idea is to provide a large amount of freedom to choose how to use your weapons and provide a post apoc 'brutal' feel to the combat eg running out of ammo for your gun so clubbing your oposition to death with the gun.
There are two basic attak type for weapons -melee and ranged attacks

melee
- Thrust, spear or bayonet
- Swing, rifle butt, pistol whip, club with a bazooka
Ranged
- Throw, Throw a spear or grenade, or even throw a pistol (if youre out of ammo)
- Single Shot, fire a single shot
- Burst Shot, Fire a automatic burst
- Spray, a flame thrower, spray toxic waste on someone from an old weed sprayer
- Secondary ammo type shot, a rifle that has an attached grenader luancher, A .45 cal pistol that has a second barrel with a single 12 gauge shot gun cartridge
 
might be me but sounds like it essentially boils down to having the option of using your gun in melee

otherwise it sounds like little bits from other games
(most guns have switch for rate of fire, spray weapons spray,)

I liked the idea of single shot mods to other arms thatd be neat and fit the attitude of fallout Id think

thing about toxic waste would be funny too

There are plenty of things that you don't want to be sprayed with, so an old weed sprayer or whatever it is in aerosol form already would make a good weapon, actually.
 
Maybe it is just me, put throwing pistols and spraying toxic waste at people sound pretty retarded to me.

Otherwise, good suggestions. Hitting with the rifle butt would be a nice add.
 
Spraying in and of itself is not a bad form of attack, but spraying toxic waste is rather lame as attacks go, considering that toxic waste is, well, toxic, and while it might make you terribly ill, even necrotizing fascitis isn't going to kill anyone quick enough to matter. Much rather be spraying something caustic (acids, bases, etc) /pain-inducing (mace, pepper spray)/on fire (napalm).

Throwing a pistol IS pretty lame as an attack goes, just reminds me of the stupid old superman TV show where someone would shoot him and he'd just stand there and take the shots, then they'd chuck the pistol at him (WTF? Movie cliche #46 -anyone carrying a personal weapon has no reloads, except the Hero, who has as many as he needs and makes them conviently off camera) and he'd DUCK. HA! But superman is stupid anyway. Then again in the ASCII game ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery) you can load anything into your "missile slot" including money, armor, food, corpses, etc. and chuck it at people, there's a missile damage value for every object in the game. But including "throw" in the attack modes of pistols would just prompt a million people starting threads about "OMFG I just thru my pistol when i ment to relode it!!!11one" because I can't honestly see anyone throwing the pistol that often rather than resorting to some other means of attack.

Pistol whipping, though, IS certainly a viable combat option. Rifles should have the ability to strike with the (fixed) stock and also use a bayonette if it's fitted.
 
I'm looking at this from a modding point of view that FO2 restricted some of the attack type variables, the engine does not allow you to throw a sledge hammer at someone for example, it's a hard coded thing. Sure not every weapon would be throwable but the engine should allow for the option of this. I know some of those types are not realistic but i mentioned them as examples. In Fallout 2 the only spray attack is the flame thrower but the engine does allow for modders to make a hand flamer (think the SMG or Pistol shooting flame), why not have a gun that fires compressed super heated steam (which is extreamly leathal). the point isnt what guns are god and what guns are crappy but that there is the option to make a spray type attack for a pistol or riffle ratehr than just leave it for the heavy weapon. I think have the option to throw a pistol coul dbe good it shows the desperation side of how conflicts could be in a PA world, I rather throw a pistol at a deathlcaw and use the distraction to try and run away than I would try to pistol whip the thing. If I out of ammo for my bazooka why can I use it as a club and wack people on the head with it, again it shows a world where people need to improvise to survive, anything can become a weapon. Why wouldnt I strap an old knife onto my pistol so I could really do some damage if some gets close etc...


It jsut most of these options were hard coded so you couldnt do this in FO2.
