Weapons in the US

I was playing a roleplaying game the other day and it took place in modern USA. One of the characters carried a handgun in his pocket and I (as the Storyteller) sent a cop on his ass (he was wanted) and the character was arrested for (amongst other) Posession of a Hidden Firearm. The player protested and said that it is legal to carry firearms in public places as long as you don't TRY to hide them from people. I said that by putting it in his pocket he had concealed it and thus it was illegal. Can someone help us out? What are the laws for possesion of firearms in public places in the US? And what are the restrictions for buying/selling firearms?

1-You need a permit to carry a handgun around with you.
2-You are NOT to show it in public unless it is a matter of life and death.
3-It really depends on where you live (hell, the local laws can be different than those of the state laws!), and on the owner of the store. In Philadelphia, I can come in a store, sign a few papers, and walk home with my new toy, and this is a best-case scenario, if the owner does everything the law requires him to. Oh, and the law is easier on rifles mostly because they are not concealable and widely used by the hunters.
As for selling... You can't sell silencers, automatic and high-capacity magazine weapons (state laws?), and of course there are restrictions on armor-piercing bullets. I'm sure there is more, it's a very big matter. Consult someone from NRA, as these guys should know more about firearm laws than anybody.

Hey, another PA boy! Of course it's the same here in Pittsburgh as in Philly. I own a handgun & permit and did a little homework on this (very little). Handgun laws are different all over the country; in some of the western states, you can carry unconcealed.

Incidentally, don't travel to other states with a handgun (concealed or otherwise) until you've called the Attorney General's office of that state (or any that you'll be passing through). Permits do NOT transfer from state to state (some do, but not many). In some states, it's a felony to carry a handgun (or drive with it in the car) without a permit from that state.

Places NOT to go with a handgun:
New York
Washington D.C.
Canada
Mexico

New York & D.C., handguns are strictly verboten. Going into Canada with one with get it confiscated (and not returned...ever). Mexico will get you a prison cell. Just remember in Mexico, you're considered guilty until proven innocent under the law!

Hope that helps someone (not the mad gunman type either).

California is also not a good place to carry a handgun.

I don't know of anywhere urban in the United States where you can walk around brandishing a gun.

Brandishing a gun and carrying a gun unconcealed are two very different things.

The carrying of a handgun in California is very restricted, but in DC & New York, I think that you're not allowed to even own a handgun. I could be wrong on that though. Anyone know for sure?

Well, hiya, I guess... What reason did you listed to have a gun permit? Unless you are a policeman or in a military...

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Aug-22-01 AT 03:56AM (GMT)[p]Neither. All you have to do is put down "Sport & protection" as your reasons for applying. That's exactly what it says on mine.

It also helps if you don't answer "yes" to certain questions on the application, such as:

Are you mentally ill?
Are you a convicted felon?
Are you a fugitive from justice?
Are you a habitual drug user?
Etc. etc.

These are actual questions from the form. I never could figure out why someone would answer yes to any of these. They'll still do a background check on you, though.

BTW, the only reason I mentioned anything about you being from PA is because all the Swedes & Canucks on this site do all this male-bonding chest-thumping stuff, and I felt soo left out! ;-)

Heh. That's what I want to do, actually.

Oh yeah! The Deathclaws from Vault 13 are still looking for that bastard who stole their GECK...

Mentats, stimpacks, buff-out, psycho, rad-X, rad-away - the usual "stuff".

Heh. Well, I hope you had a good chest-thumping time, funky.

Yeah, no kidding, Doyle.. Re-read the original post sometime, you'll see that he's clearly asking if it's legal to carry a gun around as long as you don't hide it.

OK. So if someone has a permit, and he don't wave it around in public (he keeps it in his pocket or in a holster) it's OK? What about sholder holsters and in your car (only while driving), like in the glove compartment and if someone tries to mug you while you're in the car you pull out your .44? And when you leave the car you take it with you. What about bigger weapons SMG's and assault (INSULT, as a friend of mine said once) rifles that is limited to semi-automatic fire only. (Forgot the word in english) that you "hunt" with?

Yup; it's OK to carry it into any place that isn't a federal government run establisment (post office, any school, etc). Hell, you can carry one into a bank if you wanted to (except a federal reserve bank). I can carry it in a shoulder holster or in my car. (why did that sound like the start of a Dr. Suess book?) It has to stay on you at all times while in public, though. While driving, I can keep it in my lap if I wanted to. If someone tries to carjack me, I'm within my rights to pull the weapon out & use it if I felt that my life were in danger. BOOM! The dumb motherf*cker is dead.

The point is, I can take it anywhere I go, with very few exceptions. You just can't show it without a damned good reason, i.e. if you feel that your life is threatened (or someone in your family, etc.) then go ahead. Granted, you can't shoot unless, if after they've seen the gun, they still are out to clean your clock. A gun is supposed to be a deterrant; if they're smart & stop whatever they were doing, then you have no reason to shoot. You can't just blow someone away for stepping in your garden!

As for SMG's & rifles, they're not considered a handgun, so they wouldn't fall into that catagory.
