Weird artefacts/'smearing' with Radeon 7850HD

So I have this weird 'smearing'-issue. For example, if I move the mouse-cursor (white) over planes of slightly darker colours (grey) I see some sort of short trail behind the cursor, like a light shadow. This also happens in games, it's especially notable in scenes with low contrast.
As the titles states I have a Radeon HD 7850 1GB, it goes per DVI into an ASUS VE247 monitor, my mainboard is an Asrock Z77Pro3. I run Windows 7 64Bit.
My second monitor, a Philips 190c fed by the onboard VGA-out, doesn't seem to show this problem. My flatmate has the same monitor (the ASUS, not the Philips) and also doesn't have this problem.
Drivers are all up to date.
Any ideas?

Your flatmate having the same monitor as you makes this easy to troubleshoot. Hook his monitor up to your rig, and yours up to his. If the problem persists, it is a hardware issue and hopefully is still under warrantee.

Is the DVI a DVI cord or does it use a VGA->DMI adapter?

Check all connections for any bent/missing prongs.

I'll try that today.
Although I just noticed that here, on my work computer, I do have a similar 'trail', it's a bit like the mouse-trail you can activate in Windows (which, of course, is turned off). The computer here also runs Windows 7, has a Radeon HD 3450 card and is hooked up to two Dell somethingthing monitors with some weird double-monitor-adapter-thingy.
Hm. Looks like a software issue to me, but I'll check the hardware, too.

Yeah if you can rule out hardware, my next guess is to go though all the panel based menue options and fiddle around trial and error style. Panel based meaning the settings you access through the buttons on the monitor itself.

Btw., twiddling around with the monitor is what I did. I was used to my monitor being flat and colourless, so I set up my new one accordingly. Apparently it doesn't like that so much, so after enhancing contrast, brightness and so on the smearing is basically gone.
Weird shit.
