What did you guys think about the Shadowrun Returns games?

Huh, it's been a while since a noob didn't understand the concepts of subforums sorted by topic. Thanks for bringing sexy illiteracy back ;)
I only played Shadowrun Returns, but Dragonfall is still on my list as it is supposed to be better than Returns, which I already liked quite a bit.

Played 'Returns', was disappointed by how many of old Megadrive Shadowrun was absent in here. Never touched anything else.

Dragonfall is a *lot* better then Returns, though its a very different type of game from the original Shadowrun roleplaying game

Played Dragonfall, and truth be told, i was disgusted by the writing. It felt like a complete novice wrote it. I would have continued it, but the game forced me into corny dialogue options, so even though the combat was interesting, i just could not bare the writing.

Could you give me more an in depth explanation as to why you were disgusted by the writing and how you would like to have seen it be done instead?

Small maps with piss-easy puzzles, simple combat system with childish "plastic" looking gunshots and wounds, pretty linear campaign, overly simplified dialogue system and character skill system too for my taste.. Also, it kinda sucks to find out that your precious assault rifle (and skill) become useless, since end-game immortal enemies can be killed only by magic shotgun.

Good writing in the original campaign anyway, I really liked that detective plot and NPCs. Excellent music and outstanding graphics style, good atmosphere overall.

5/10 in hard numbers; too short and too simple for my taste. One of those play&forget games for me.

It started from the very beginning where i was forced into corny responses to the female orc character on the radio, the whole party banter felt forced and not natural. I can't remember the specifics, but it made me cringe a lot. The fact that i played it when i was also playing POE just made things worse, as i could compare the two.

So you felt like the game didn't provide you enough roleplaying options? And how would you like to see it fixed?

Options would be nice, but it won't fix anything if all the options suck, because of sucky writing of the situations you get in to. The game tries too hard with the whole party banter drama.

I like them a lot, but wish they were more complex. Looking forward to the next one, which is likely set in Seattle.

That said, you need to remember that regardless what you do, you'll be railroaded pretty hard. But that isn't too bad really since it's not marketed as a sandbox. We loved V:tM-B too, and that was linear as hell.

Yeah I'm hoping for more roleplaying options, I made my character in Shadowrun Hong Kong to be a ex-corporate agent from Russia with a code name and the like, only then to be disappointed with finding out that my character has a backstory of growing up in Seattle and spending years of his life in prison, I think that stuff like that should be more open to the player. Likewise I think that there should be more possible ways of completing a level

I liked them all, I reached the point when I beat each game I would feel like I wanted it to go for longer.

So for me the worst thing about them is that they are too short (or maybe they are so addictive that I still wanted to play for way more hours).

I can also see they are not for everyone, they are not super games. But I love myself turn based RPGs and turn based tactical RPGs (my favourite genre I guess) and there are not enough games of those categories on the PC, so I devour any I can find :hide:

: I pretty much agree with what's been said, they are good games but also very simplistic, especially the first one.

I mostly like them for the setting and the writing, although there was some TL: DR in Hong Kong, mostly in the investigation run.

I've played SRR and Dragonfall. I have the Hong Kong campaign, but I haven't gotten around to installing it yet. The atmosphere was perfect: dark, dystopian, and full of morally ambiguous choices. The music was great. I was unenthusiastic about their translation of the PnP game rules to computer. I think that the old Sega Genesis game has done that the best. That said, the system that Jordan and his team came up with worked; it's just that mechanically it didn't feel like Shadowrun to me. I was disappointed the most by their implementation of cyberware. It was difficult to get the needed money for better gear and fit in much of any cyberware. What cyberware there was tended to match the old SR2/3 rules loosely, if at all.

It's interesting to see that no one has mentionned fanmade modules yet. Those I tried had potential, but were not really that great sadly.

I recently started the Antumbra one after seeing some people recommend it and it looks alright so far.

So, what is your experience with them?

I tried a few fan modules after I finished SRR, but the few that had sounded interesting turned out to be variations on "moar drugz 'n whores" mods.

I tried a few but there wasn't many available back then, I didn't find any really good or even interesting.
I think it was because I played each game very close to when they were released.
