what government types are in fallout anyway?

It Wandered In From the Wastes
i mean, all factions need to have something resembling government, but games really dont give a damn about explaining it all that well. for some factions atleast. like BoS, Enclave, NCR, Legion, Raiders, Institute, Provisional Government of Commonwhealth, Remnants of Masters army, Vault 87 Mutants, any other faction you came up with. thx for opinions.
some real world examples would be incredible, like national soialism, constitutional monarchy, imperialish style etc.

The BoS has an elder, who seems to be elected, but serves for life. They are in charge, but delegate a lot of power to relevant people like the heads of the various orders, and if they deviate too much from the Codex, they are liable to find themselves deposed and replaced.

The Enclave claim to hold elections, but are a fascist dictatorship. It's not made clear if the leader is elected by some sort of inner cabal, if they can be replaced. In practice, they also probably serve for life, and when they die, they are replaced by a sort of quasi-democratic process by powerful individuals within the Enclave

The NCR is a democratic system, with direct elections to the senate from each of the states, and an elected president, very similar to how the US currently runs. Corruption means that a lot of the power actually resides in the hands of rich people who can afford to run for or fund elected representatives.

The Legion is a dictatorship with Caesar holding absolute power. There is no clear line of succession, apart from the generally-assumed fact that Lanius will remain in charge of the armed forces in the event of Caesar's death.

Raiders have no consistent structure, but will generally act in self-interest. Maybe the strongest person controls through sheer force until they are killed in their sleep. Maybe they let a sneaky person decide plans because that gets them more loot and less chance of being killed.

Remnants of the Master's Army, possible still holding to military organisation with officers in charge. This appears to be how the Nightkin in New Vegas operate, but other factions, such as Tabitha's mutants, have had charismatic leaders rise up to control them.

Vault 87 Mutants. I strongly doubt Bethesda thought too much about how they organise themselves. At face value they appear to be almost like a hive mind, united in some sort of purpose without obvious leaders.

what about institute or provisional government of commonwhealth/minutemen? also, what other factions can you think of? anything will help me in my modding

enclave is a democratic (at least they say so) stratocrazy who wants to establish a totalitarian fascist state.

the wastern bos is a quasi-religious oligarchy, with military grades cos they're renmants of us troops.

legion is totalitaristic empire with an absolute monarch, don't know if they have a senate like Rome.

ncr is basically the modern usa.

mr house is an objectivist.

the new bos are miniarchist.

raiders? well they are mad anarchist

the followers of apocalypse are the good anarchist-type

what about institute/slaver groups/minutemen etc?

You have places like Goodsprings which are more a kin to a commune where everyone does what they can with no real structure. The institute has a board of directors like a large corporation. Minutemen were local militia here's an article on the actual minutemen if you're interested http://www.ushistory.org/people/minutemen.htm
nice! thanks. do you know hearts of iron 3? paradox game? what do you think about fallout mod for it?

According to New Vegas, the NCR doesn't have term limits and Tandi was President for life and is venerated as a kind of culture hero.

I haven't played Fallout 4 yet, so I don't really know.

A couple of other minor factions I can think of:

The Boomers are tribals with a leader, who doesn't appear to be elected. Obviously Pearl isn't going to be a formidable fighter, so it's more likely that she stays in power because of wisdom, experience and respect.

The Powder Gangers aren't really a coherent faction. Whenever they took over the prison, the strongest people would have attracted followers, and they get what they want by force or intimidation. If you don't like it, you challenge them, or you leave to form a smaller splinter group

The Fiends are supposedly under control from Motor Runner, and it seems like this is done with the promise of drugs, due to his contact with the Khans. If you go against him he has the power to cut off your supply. The Fiends outside the vault seem only loosely affiliated with him, and he doesn't really seem to care what they do so long as they don't oppose him. They have their own minor leaders, who are probably just the ones strong enough or crazy enough to enforce their authority on those below them.

Westside and North Vegas both look like sort of anarcho-communist places. Small enough for those systems to actually work. They don't look like they have strong leaders, and everyone just sort of gets on with what they want to do. Problems and defence are handled by militias instead of a standing army, and major decisions are probably made as a group.

The Kings are just tribals with fancy clothes. Again, the King stays in charge because of the respect the Kings have for him. If he ever starts to make decisions that are too unpopular or abuse his power, the group will either fracture, or overthrow him.

There don't seem to be any true monarchies in the game, although the leadership of the Brotherhood does look like it quite often stays within the same families. Whether this is an official thing, if Elders can nominate their successors, or if it's just that the Maxsons happen to be good leadership material, combined with a family culture of raising their kids for command is never really explored.

Which Caesar mentions as being contradictory to the dear democratic values held by the NCR. Not only does he mock it as hypocritical but he also states how effective and powerful the NCR was during her control as a kind of dictator, while democracy weakens the NCR. Interesting viewpoint.

Caesar is very much the Well-Intentioned Extremist. His views on slavery, women and military don't exactly endear him to me, but he's without a doubt one of the strongest leaders in the wasteland.

Nah, he's an asshole and he knows it well, but at the same time he understands sometimes the best leaders are assholes.
