And why won't my computer play media files that have something to do with it? Is it a type of driver file? Take pity; help a dumbass expand his knowledge.

"Did we give up when the GERMAN'S bombed Pearl Harbor?"

It's a codec that seems to have very poor support, but I don't really know much about it because the only mainstream site I've encountered it on is Something Awful.

DivX was a crappy limited-time-use DVD system that Circuit City tried to sell but ultimately failed.

However the DivX you're talking about is a video codec that takes advantage of MPEG4 compression routines to achieve relatively small filesizes for good quality video. For instance a DVD rip of a movie like the Matrix can fit on a CD if done correctly. DivX originally started out as a hack of Microsoft's AFS codec in order to allow the videos to use higher bitrates than streaming content rates and include different compression formats. The codec has now matured beyond a mere hack and has many features and such. DivX is the medium of choice for distributing videos via the internet.

Example:

That 640x368 image is just one frame from a 24fps (PAL fps) half-hour video that is only 185 megs in size.

You can read more about DivX and download the codec at http://www.divx.com/ .

DivX is pretty baddass if you like downloading movies from the internet. You can get pretty good resolutions and just watch em on your computer instead of renting them or buying them. It's not as good as quality as DVD though so if you really like the movie you should just go buy it. but its nice to see movies youve never seen before.

True it isn't as good as a real DVD, but for most intents and purposes, people can't tell the difference if the resolution is high enough. I still hate the blocks though.

I've been told that if you watch very very very closely and very very carefully a DVD movie you could still see the box artifacts due to the MPG based compression... No idea about that, haven't seen to many movies in DVD format :)

Yeah you can, but they're a lot less evident in MPEG2 compression than in MPEG4, of course the MPEG4-compressed movie is only 700 megs compared to 4 GB.
