What does make a great game? Well, to me, it's one that will stay with you for your entire life. One that you will compare things to, and makes examples of. The true essence of it is something I can't exactly put my finger on. The reason I bring this up is because I just beat Meatal Gear Soild 2. It's the only game besides F2 that has become part of my thoughts and part of that thing I can't put my finger on. It's a comforting and chest filling feeling, yet it also excites me and provokes new thoughts. I think it's something that only an "upper-level" thinker really understands. I'm sure people like Xotor(seems pretty "upper-level" to me) really grasp even more than me. Maybe it's crazy talk, but hey, it's a pretty good feeling if you ask me.

For me, it's replay value. The more I can play the game again and again the more I like it. So games like Starcraft (online), The Sims, Railroad Tycoon II and Fallout (of course) NEVER get boring. Although, the game does need to be solid. Ie. Not only story and setting but coding as well. Ie. Not many crashes!

Moo..... Moo.... I'm an Interplay Cow. (Ready to be milked with a Fallout style MMORPG with aliens!)

hey skeeter, its nice to talk to upper-level thinkers .... i think the best games to play have an excellent story line which doesnt have holes , has replay value (already said) and some sort of complexity , i like to be able to have a 1,000 quests to keep me going throughout it... i think another thing which make a game truly "fun" (as in being there and enjoying yourself, not just enjoying it at the start then only playing it to say you finished it , which i did in mario 64 and such "collecting" games) is non-linearity , when a game is non-linear it lets you do things at your own pace eg. fallout 1/2, GTA 1/2/3.... i think were fallout tactics went wrong was that it was extremely linear , you knew where you were going , what had to be done and when it was complete you were left feeling empty .... in fallout 1 and 2 when you completed a mission it gave you a good feeling and it gave you a reward (armour , stimpaks, guns, karma points, a higher town reputation any was good) and some of the time it gave you a bit of a laugh.....

yeah i know how you feel, people who know me notice that i constantly quote from some of my favorite games, so they do stay with me throughout my life.

1. Good gameplay - If the game is fun and enjoyable, then it is worth the money you payed for it because you will probably spend lots of time playing.

2. Good story - If the story is good, then you will spend time playing it to get more of the story. The only drawback for this category is when the gameplay becomes monotonous and the only reason you keep spending time on the game is to find out what happens. This happened to me when I played Deus Ex. I almost finished it, but I got so damn bored. (I stopped playing when I was in that one military base thing with the computer and stuff).

I think the really great games have both of these. There are probably other things that make good games as well, but I can't think of them right now.

I really like what you have to say Skip, you put into words my main concept. I think also maybe that the game has to have a sort of realism, i.e. not Sonic or Mario in order to have a real effect on me.

"Fear can hold you prisoner, hope can set you free."

I think fallout 2 hit near perfection. Good story line (not as good as first but it is a sequel) replay value, and all that jazz. To me, i dont want F3 (there still some of us praying for it) to be a different game. more like an expansion to f2.

hey thanks skeeter , realism in games adds to the fun too ,i enojoyed in fallout how your characters had boundaries , you only had set amounts of attributes ,as in st , ag and so on , you couldnt create a god character (although you could almost) ...... for realism id say fallout 1 was best for that , radiation, guns , mutant autopsy's Oh My !....
