Where can I find a decent Small gun and reliable Ammo supply

First time out of the vault
Soon as I get to Vault City I get overwhelmed.. I cant kill anything with those 10mm pistols or anything and when I found the Assault rifle I cant find shops selling the ammo and im getting wasted in the wasteland by raiders and stuff... please can someone help me.. Im struggling.. gonna start a new game incase I screwed up somewhere but man this is hard...
 
Pickpocket money > buy weaponry.

Other than that you can grab yourself a gun from somewhere and work your way up with Raider encounters.
 
Did you get the Vault City Citizenship Test or the Fake Citizenship Papers? This would allow you to shop at Randall's store inside, which should help some of that.
 
Grab a hunting rifle off a corpse or in a shop fairly early in the game. Take a trip to NCR, sanfran, and New Reno, stock up on ammo after selling some weapons or something.

Alot of shops sell .223 ammo because the bozar uses it. Upgrade to the .223 pistol when possible.

Because of the high damage ammo used ratio, You don't need very much ammo to kill anything not wearing power armor or is a deathclaw.


For a good karma outcome murder tubby and flick in "the Den" and take their inventory.
(Note, if you don't care about playing a "good" guy Murder the shop keeper of new reno arms and loot his inventory. Your upgrades are faster, free, and more available in his basement anyway)



Basically if your having ammo problems choose single shot options with high damage. (Or use the 10mm SMG and put that 10mm ammo to use)
