Where do I install f2ie item editor?

I unzipped the f2ie2.exe, f2ie2.inf to the fallout2 directory and tried to load up a save game, but it keeps saying

cannot open file \data\savegame\slot1\save.dat

Now I did use a previous character editor for this game and altered my savegames and that worked. Could there be a confliction with this? I started a new game with and saved to a new slot, but it still gave me the error. I also tried placing the editor in the data folder and savegame folder, but it is still not working. I installed the game on XP manually and haven't installed any patches. Any suggestions?

f2ie checks the registry to find the save folder, so that doesn't work too well with manual installs. You can try inserting this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Interplay\Fallout2\1.0\

Key name "DestPath", value = your Fo2 base folder.

Hey you were right. I tried editing the registry keys, but I guess I wasn't doing it correctly. But I managed to install it automatically where it added the registry keys normally and now it works. Thanks!
