Why do you like Fallout?

The post-apoc setting (especially the usage of Cold War propaganda), the background story, loads of sidequests, great humor, weapons that fit the setting perfectly, the freedom to do absolutely anything you want, replay value, etc. But most of all, the way everything was put together with fantastic style and attention to details. "This is Ed. Ed's dead." What other game offers such a description for a pile of bones?

I agree to all that pastorius has said, amazing detail put into the world (could use a couple more locations on the West side [Fallout 2]) but really there is already so much to do in the numerous locations available. The replay value is incredible. I am ashamed to say that I have no played Fallout 1 (I am trying to get my hands on it) but I have played and passed Fallout 2 and BoS. Though I am not as fond of BoS because of the lack of freedom that is offered by The Second and First ones. I have created at least 10 diffrent characters (attempted to pass that game with all of them) in the 8 years which I have had Fallout 2.

The freedom to do whatever you want. Had it been linear, I would've left it on the store shelf.

FO1: The post-apocalypse setting, the writing, the look and feel, most definitely the music, the combat system, the storyline, the freedom to more or less be the character you want to be, the humor, the characters, the dialogue, the retro futurism, the awesome intro, the sad poignant ending.

FO2: I don't.

The freedom, you can do almost anything you want.
The combat system,i dunno why but i love it.
The post apocolyptic theme, its so cool.

The most important thing for me was the setting. The 1950s Cold War alternate reality of post WWIII. The silly 1950s style humor (Mr. Handy etc.). The unforgiving darkness of the atmosphere, as well (raiders/gangs/whores/drugdealers). The desolate wasteland. There's more of nothing than something. Of course, other things such as the Brotherhood of Steel, the Vaults, the rough, broken down towns/cities, mutated lifeforms, gore and radiation added much to the game's atmosphere.

The gameplay was also great. Being able to talk your way out of trouble or into more trouble was awesome. Doing whatever you wanted whenever you wanted to do it. The turnbased combat was simple and slow, but still very exciting. Clenching my fists between turns praying that I'll make it through to the next. Always thinking one move ahead, making sure you have enough ammo in your clip or enough action points to make it around the corner after you fire. Aimed shots to various points on the body were great fun also.

It is a damn good game.

It was the first 'real' rpg I ever played that made me feel like I was playing a table top PNP game. Everything else, from the 50's SCIENCE! to the post apocalyptic world was just an added bonus.

Fallout turned me from a Final Fantasy <s>moron</s> Fanboy to a life long Fallout/cRPG <s>moron</s> fan.

Long live turn-based, isometric, true to PNP RPGS!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program, all ready in progress.

*Edit: Typo... Yes, I will even edit a week old post!*

No other game pulled me into the setting the way fallout did. You really get the feel that you are in the position that your character is in. By the time I reached the Hub, I was hooked. I played through both games only to find myself thirsty for more.

It was also really refreshing to see a game that wasn't afraid to be truly violent and gritty.

I like both of 'em Fallout games because I love anything that's post-apoc no matter how cheesy it is. Anyone who makes a good post-apoc game, movie or book is a skilled visionary because Humanity has never been through a true apocalypse..... (No the plagues and floods don't count they were centered around one landmass)
So serious kudos to anyone who does anything within this genere

Background story,post-nuclear world(wasteland),special atmosphere of a wasteland world, easter eggs and that kinda stuff, violence, freedom in your actions etc.

I can't put my finger on it. Lets just say I love the scenario, sound, graphics, the all.

Fo was the second game I have ever played, the atmosphere made me want to have someone in the room whilst playing because I was so scared going through a dark tunnel full of rats by myself. How old was I back then? 10? Pansy! =]

years later I was informed, that there is a bloodpatch (since no gore in german version), this way I found vault13.de, one of the two big elite german fo-forums. it died, but will eventually ressurect.

I think Fallout is such a wonderful game because you have so much freedom. If you choose to kill everyone in junktown or the hub (or my favorite the BoS), it won't affect the main purpose of your character. All the free choices you have makes it so special. Rescue the ghouls in necropolis by fixing their waterpump or kill them right away and still get the xp for fixing the damn thing:P

Other than the freedom; the music is the best ever, the post apocalypse theme is also a great idea and not to mention the weapons, armors and all the other items.

(This opinion of mine is almost fully based on Fallout and a bit on Fallout 2. No Fallout Tactics)

Since it/they were the first RPG's I ever liked.(and I still haven't found anything I would claim to be a proper RPG ever since)

So what I liked about the FO's -in case I should stumble over another game I'd call an RPG- is the gritty atmosphere, the humour that never interfeared with the story, the background, the NPC's....and if you'd include what I call an RPG,it would mean everything about them....

The first thing that cought my eye was the box itself. "Pimp out your wife" made me laugh. (dual jewel box) Secondly it was the overall content in it. The 1950-ish style music and old reels and such.
I also thought everything with the character creation. Love the SPECIAL stats.
Third of all I was tired of all the ogres and fairies and crap.
Fourth and my favourite was the post apocalyptic theme. I had never seen that in an RPG before (I am too young to know about Wasteland, till now that is)

The post nuclear apocalypse setting creates an awesome atmosphere. The story drew me in. Character creation w/ SPECIAL is awesome. 2 words Bloody Mess

01. Post apocalyptic setting
02. Gameplay
03. Story / plot
04. "freedom" in playing
05. Atmosphere overall
06. Music & sound effects
07. Graphics
08. Size of the world
09. Attention to detail
10. Richness of it all

Hell, I've listened the Fallout soundtracks so much during all these years (especially the more creepty tunes) ... I have to say that I'm still so impressed with how Fallout generates such a strong and thick atmosphere, with the music / sounds, graphics etc combined. Even if Fallout's (1 & 2) graphics were said to be less impressive right from the start (at least I remember reading such reviews in distant past) I think they more than made an amazing setting for the Fallout's world.

It's hard to honestly say what games would have impressed me as much. Perhaps Ultima Underworld 1 back in the early 90s get the closest in how it impressed me overall.
