Will I lose my save files if I patch Fallout 2 'mid-game'?

Gnosis

First time out of the vault
The situation is this:

I've just started playing Fallout 2 again, after a hiatus of several years. However, for some reason I forgot patching the game before I started playing. Now I've reached Klamath, done some missions there, things are going fine, but then I remembered ... the car trunk bug.
I've experienced this bug (and several others) before, so I know how irritating it can be.

Anyway, the question I'm asking is:

Will I lose my save files if I patch the game now?
And could I perchance be so lucky as to avoid this bug and other severe ones altogether -- even without patching?

I'm using Win XP and the official version of the game, the European "Best Buy"-version if my memory serves me right.

I'm sorry if my questions are stupid, but I need some definite answers before I waste more time playing.

You will lose your saves if you change the version you are playing. However, there is a Save Converter utility on NMA's file page. I do not know, though, if it works with European versions purchased at BestBuy? But it is worth a shot.

As with most games there is a chance you will lose your saved data when patching. The RP 2.0 will break your saves. I still suggest you download and install it from a clean install. You'll experience tons of "new" content and thousands of bug fixes.

Thanks!

But can I go through the game without experiencing major glitches if I don't patch it at all?
What are my chances?

The game is completely beatable out of the box without patches - but this is not recommended. Just keep a healthy slew of save games in case things get whacky. I played through the game twice back in 1999 and did not even realize it needed patching till the third time my car got split in half. Other things that can go wrong include a bunch of NPC triggers and what not.

Your best bet (assuming you're married to these saves) is to make some copies of your save game files. Patch the game. Convert your saves using the application. If they don't load in the new patched version, uninstall your patched Fallout2, and just reinstall the box version. Import your copied save games and resume without the patch.
