Win XP SP1, FO2, Install problem.

First time out of the vault
I'm in need of some help here, I tried searching the forum and googling for info, but there seems to be no good solution.

Today I decided to play Fallout 2 again, on my laptop with XP Pro SP1, and of course I immediatly ran into trouble, when trying to run the installer I get "Couldn't initialize the input system. Please try rebooting your computer.". I've tried setting different compatibility modes and I also followed the only advice I found about this issue and tried changing the settings for my mouse driver (and even disabling one of them, thus turning off my USB mouse), nothing helped...

Any suggestions?

Do you see the stickyed post at the very top of this forum?

I've seen it and read it, but it is of little help to me..

From the thread:
now, install the game from the CD and do the humongeous install (you have to do this in order to get all of the right stuff in the DATA folder)

From my post:
...when trying to run the installer I get "Couldn't initialize the input system. Please try rebooting your computer.".

Try adding a little more "manual" in the "manual install". :) If you kept reading or thought about it, copying the entire /DATA folder over would have been the same thing as a humongous installed.

That line is a little odd, mainly because here has a bit of a clearer explanation of how to manually install for newer OSs and what files are needed top be copied over.

Ah, thanks. I'll try that. I admit that I read up until the part about how you need to run the installer and then just skimmed the article looking for something about the installer problem I've been having...

EDIT:
Ok, I've tried it now, didn't work very well, I'm still getting the same error, but now from the Fallout2.exe executable. Maybe FO2 just doesn't like my new computer...

Hmm, run dxdiag, and check to make sure sound acceleration is turned all the way off, and make sure all your drivers for input devices are valid.
