Win XP Startup to Blank Screen to Desktop Crash for FO2

First time out of the vault
Ok so I've been reading the forums and here's my problem:

Start FO2, Blank Screen, Crash.

I've switched compatability modes and screen size and 256 colors, still no luck.

Here is as far as I have gotten:

Diabled video card, restarted, set compatability mode to Win 95.

this alone does nothing but when I ctrl+alt+del and disable CTHELPER it shows the rocket around the planet, it begins the whole "war, war never changes" thing BUT it's like movie is letter boxed and the top and bottom of my screen are these weirdly colored sections of my desktop. When the intro movie ends I can't make out anything except for crazy ass colors and my desktop icons blink in red. Finally I hit escape and I go back to the desktop.

....so.... what to do..?

I could swear that when I first got this computer I could run the game but after a recent format no luck which makes me think that it's got to be either the video or the audio card and I'm thinking it's the audio card since CTHELPER is a soundblaster app that has to do with plugins.

I'm running Win XP, Nvidia 5900 FX, Creative Audigy, Pentium 4

one more note:

The Fallout.exe has a picture of some random fat dude's head instead of the blonde hair PIP boy.

also, the auto play screen doesn't give me the option to hit "Play" even after I've installed. that button stays grey.

Thats normal, alot of easter eggs in F2.

Did you try the good old uninstall and reinstall?

Have you tried doing a manual install, where instead of running the setup program you just copy the files from the CD? If not, here's the guide: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1593

Other than that, I'm at a loss. A lot of people have been having trouble running the game lately, I'm starting to think maybe it's finally showing it's age and is slowly sinking into the same category DOS games are in.

well some good news. the manual install did work for fallout 1 which i am currently playing and am very happy about this fact. however, still no luck with fallout 2 (that's what i was really getting at).

is there a manual install for fallout 2?

btw, uninstall/install doesn't work.

No one made one for Fallout 2, but since the structure of the two games is pretty identical I think you could just follow the same instructions for it.

Well hopefully I can try this sometime tonight but since my gf would like to go out I doubt I'll be able to reply on my results until tomorrow. so until then...

Well good luck :)

You'll find that while the general feel of FO2 isnt as good as FO1, the gameplay is much improved.

oh yeah I know I've been playing fallout 1 and 2 for years but only recently has it become a chore to get them to work. I figure I can just take everything on my computer now and zip them or rar them and burn it to CD so I don't have to go through everything again.

BTW if anyone has any problems with the manual install post them because I had a few and I can probalby help you trouble shoot.

Open fallout.cfg with notepad.

Now you just have to add the line free_space=0 into the file like this:

[sound]
music_path1=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\data\sound\music\
music_path2=D:\data\sound\music\

[system]
critter_dat=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\data
master_dat=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\master.dat
master_patches=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\data
art_cache_size=261
free_space=0

For some reason, just opening the master file in wordpad does the job for me. Of course, it is quite possible that this might occur only in my case, due to the crappy computer I'm using. But I say it's worth a shot (If solution above doesn't work for you)

I don't know how many times I've posted this, aren't there somekind of sticky for frequent problems?
