Windows 7 - How to fix wonky colours? STEAM Version.

CroutonsOfDeath

First time out of the vault
I lost my old CDs a long time ago, and just recently bought them off Steam so I could replace them. They worked fine on my old Windows XP computer but now that I have Windows 7 the colours have gone ape shit. Running it in compatibility mode just gives me an error saying I need Direct X 3.0 or something like that. How can I fix this? Help very much appreciated, thanks.

Have you tried installing the RP?
Or you could try:

1) Install Fallout 2
2) Install Killaps patch (Purely for bugfixes)

3) Install Fallout 2 High Resolution Patch v2.02
Link: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42386
4) Open f2_res.ini and paste over the entire [Main] section with:

[MAIN]
;####################################################### ############################################ ###############
;Set the screen resolution here
SCR_WIDTH=640
SCR_HEIGHT=480

;Set the number of colours here
; 8 for 8bit(original)
; 16 for 16bit colour (set only if your not using Sfall with graphics modes 4 or 5)
COLOUR_BITS=16

;Position of the Hi-Res Settings Button in the Main-Menu: valid positions are 1-7.
HI_RES_BUTTON_POS=5

5) Play Fallout 2

Call me a fool, but I'm not sure what the RP is. Honestly I've been out of the loop when it comes to Fallout modding or gaming in general. Until around mid 2008, I was on a fairly long hiatus from gaming so that I could work on getting my degree and traveling the world with my wife.

Regardless, Fallout 2 now plays like a charm!

My next question though, does such a bug fix or other method exist for Fallout 1? If I try to use the Fallout 1 high resolution patcher, it says I have an incompatible .exe. It said that too when I tried the FO2 high resolution patch without the bug fix, but obviously running the bug fix changed the exe and made it compatible.

Glad to hear you got it working :)
This is how I install / play F1 on Vista x64:

1) Install Fallout 1
2) Install "Fallout_1_TeamX_Patch_ENG_1.2w"
3) Install "f1child_patch"
4) Install "fallup13" - this is the TeamX patch 1.3.4
5) Install "f1npcmod" from TeamX
6) Install "sfall1"
7) Install "Fallout1_High_Resolution_Patch_v1.3"
8) Open f1_res and set AUTO_SCRN_SIZE = 0, then your desired resolution, then if you want, change the way ingame movies work, either fullscreen or not....up to you.Same with movie sub

The only way I've found to get F2 to work on my pc (without rainbow colors) is I have to set my desktop background to "solid colors" then I have to open "screen resolution" and leave that window open and then start up F2. I don't know why that works but it does. ^_^

Also, I forgot to mention, I can't even begin the install process for F1....says "Sorry, but this product is not supported by this version of Windows.". I'm not too sure how to get it to install at all and haven't ran accross any answers online. Help please? Thanks in advance.

Where can you find sfall1? I saw that in your The_Ultimate_Fallout_Installation.rar that you have it in there, but in the files section of NMA for Fallout, the link there only goes to the Fallout 2 sfall.

I guess I'll just use the version you have in your zip. Thank you.

Edit: Followed PainlessDocM instructions to the letter (and used his zip) then changed "ddraw.ini", set Mode=0. In "f1_res", set COLOUR_BITS=16.

Works just fine now. (Windows 7 Pro and original Fallout 1.0 US version).

I'm looking for a similar fix to F.O. 1 to the one mentioned above at the moment. I really don't want to install another version of windows or anything that serious just to play a game. Changing the colors isn't working. Does anyone have a fix for this?

Use PainlessDocM inistructions and keep the screen resolution open, that's how I play FO1 in Windows 7 SP1 in 1280 x 800 (I have an 22" display, but anything above this resolution will make things REALLY small).

For Fallout 2 I'm pretty sure there's an in-game menu that can be used to fix the colors. Fallout 1 is a bit more complicated though. :?

;Set the number of colours here
; 8 for 8bit(original)
; 16 for 16bit colour (set only if your not using Sfall with graphics modes 4 or 5)
COLOUR_BITS=16

;Position of the Hi-Res Settings Button in the Main-Menu: valid positions are 1-7.
HI_RES_BUTTON_POS=5
