World Without People-

At the airport today, I noticed that this book, the World without us.. has gone paperback.

Its based on an elaboration of an article written in Discover Magazine.

http://discovermagazine.com/2005/feb/earth-without-people

The article starts-

Given the mounting toll of fouled oceans, overheated air, missing topsoil, and mass extinctions, we might sometimes wonder what our planet would be like if humans suddenly disappeared. Would Superfund sites revert to Gardens of Eden? Would the seas again fill with fish? Would our concrete cities crumble to dust from the force of tree roots, water, and weeds? How long would it take for our traces to vanish? And if we could answer such questions, would we be more in awe of the changes we have wrought, or of nature’s resilience?

More on the book and discussion is here-

The books official website. Cheezy intro.

Note that the book assumes that mankind no longer exists and that human kind has disappeared. It does not assume some climatic or nuclear catastrophe.

What do you think?

I thought this was kind of cool.

lurk moar! i think links to this have been posted in several threads. anyhow it might deserve an own fred! and, this is NOT ad hominem! i like your tl;dr threads.

i found the whole thing a bit disappointing and only appealing to people who had no interest at all in dystopian environments. its like stating the obvious, admittedly in a publicly appealing way and form. but, i have learned nothing new, and it certainly didnt meet my taste in presentation and depth.

I like it, if this is how we go then at least life can still continue. I would actually like to see what a big city covered in jungle and weeds would look like, half collapsed buildings and near invisible sidewalks covered with plants.

Calm and quiet. It's better than a nuclear catastrophe

It's got a nihilistic purity to it in a sense. There's meloncholy present, that's for sure, but, life degressing back to it's primal stages might be the next best thing for earth. Question is, would a new species evolve into sentience like the last once?

Man, this look really good, I'll have to check it out, I always have liked reading things about what the world could be like without humanity.
