Would the shotgun even be useful to me?

My Fallout Collection DVD has arrived (but I didn't check mailbox until after dinner, foolish me). And I'm just starting FO1 as Max Stone. I've gone a little ways and I'm wondering: Is the shotgun even worth carrying around? It deals not alot more damage than my brass knuckles, has to reload every 2 shots, and can only be used once per turn as opposed to using my fists twice. What about targeted shots, do they work better than fists?

What about a shotgun being a ranged weapon? ;)

It all depends on your skills, obviously. If your Unarmed is higher than Small Guns, go for HtH; if it's the other way around, stick to a Desert Eagle rather than a shotgun and later try and get a combat shotgun in the Hub.

And I really suggest you make your own character instead of playing them pre-defined. That's all the fun!

I experimented with the desert eagle and wasn't too impressed with my to-hit chance with headshots.

Then don't do headshots. Just do normal shots with guns till you increase your smallguns skill.

Or use a hunting rifle which improves your chances to hit. Or aim for other body parts - crippling a leg of a guy with a spear (Khans come to mind) is sometimes useful.

Welcome to the wonderful world of rollplaying. WARNING: your character does not possess godlike skills at level 1.

On a more serious note, I'd suggest trying out stuff on your own. Even if it means that you'll start over a few times.

You're not going to be able to accurately do head/eye shots at a distance until your level is in the teens and you have respectable proficiency in whichever weapons skill you're using.
I don't even use anything other than normal shots until I reach a somewhat high level.

It isn't Fallout 3, your character is going to have to be really good to hit someone in the eyes from fifty feet away.

I am well aware that this is an RPG where your characters skills matter, not yours. I just wanted to know if I should have sold the shotgun and ammo or kept it. Money was tight and I really wanted to take some of the pressure off of meeting the water chip deadline by buying supplements from the water merchants.

Sawn-offs aren't too useful and won't fetch you too many caps, along with being inaccurate and expensive in AP.

The shotgun is a decent weapon early on. You will find better stuff soon enough. And the time limit isn't really a problem in most playthroughs.

It's better than the 10mm pistol. The hunting rifle does the same amount of damage (taking ammo and armor modifiers into account), with a larger clip and nearly three times the range. The Desert Eagle has a decent range and clip size, but not the accuracy bonus the other two have. It does slightly less damage with FMJ ammo, slightly more with JHP.

In short, Desert Eagle/JHP > hunting rifle > shotgun > Desert Eagle/FMJ . A good weapon progression is taking the shotgun from V13's weapons room, use it on radscorpions and tougher rats until you get through V15 and pick up the weapons there. Use the hunting rifle and SMG burst-fire to take out the raiders, which will get you a Desert Eagle and plenty of ammo. You won't need more ammo before you reach the Hub, at which point you have plenty of choices.
