Wrong F2 patch on bonus CD?

First time out of the vault
I recently bought Fallout - The Ultimate Collection which included Fallout 1, 2 & Tactics as well as a bonus CD with manuals, patches etc. But the patch for the English version of F2 seems to be f***ed up. It's not a self-extracting file but a zip and some weird folders. Is this how it was shipped or do I have some screwed version? Anyone encountered the same?

Well, there was a .txt file with patch info talking about a self-extracting file which didn't exist and in the zip file were three files, fallout2.exe, patch000.dat and readme.txt. Also, there was an empty master.dat folder and a data folder (which I couldn't copy to my Fallout 2 folder). Anyways I extracted the zip file to my Fallout 2 folder which I think is what I was supposed to do, even though I hate when you get instructions which are obviously wrong...

Anyways, I have another problem now: Fallout 2 refuses to load since it keeps complaining about how it needs the CD to run (duh), but even though my CD is in, nothing happens. I'm using WinXP Pro and my CD-drive is E:

Since you copied the fallout2.exe and patch000.dat files to the fallout2 directory you're all set as far as patching goes.

For the other issue, check the fallout2.cfg file and make sure that it's pointing to e:\ when it needs to be. If that doesn't work just install the humungous version so you won't need the CD.

Open the fallout2.cfg (or whatever it's called -- ending is *.cfg anyway) file in your fallout2 folder and check the line about cdlock.
It reads something like cdlock=E:\cdlock.dat I think. Either way, check the drive letter.

Other than that, try compatibility modes for Win98 and Win95 or try running it without either.

Well, tinkering always produces SOME results.

Well, here comes the fun part; I installed the humongous version and the line with cdlock in the .cfg-file has the right drive letter. What to do, what to do...?

In the troubleshooting thread, Odin has this listed in his example cfg file (not part of the troubleshooting, it was just conspicuous in light of this thread):

cdlock=C:\Programs\mIRC\download\cdlock.dat

Maybe you could experiment with copying the cdlock.dat file to your hard disk and changing the cfg file? Can't hurt at this point. I've heard people mention that getting a no-cd fix for FO2 will eliminate this as well, your on your own getting it though. Mounting it in Daemon Tools is another option as well.

On a side note, they really screwed Europeans over with this game: no blood, no kids, cd-checker... why the hell would they do this to the Euro/British releases and not the american?

Well I got myself a crack which I installed and as far as I know, the game runs smoothly. Thanks for all your help, boys.

The no blood is only for the low-violence version. I don't even know if there's any other lv one than the German version.
And we get routinely fucked over that way.
