Yet another Chernobyl expedition

First time out of the vault
We, a group of six finnish guys, were on a trip to Ukraine and Chernobyl last weekend. Here's my gallery with the photos.

Also check out what New York Times has to say about our trip.

Here's a few teaser photos. Check out the rest of them in my gallery and, while you're at it, take a look at the other guys' galleries I've linked to from there.

Great, can you tell me how you guys managed to obtain authorization and organize a trip to Pripyat / Chernobyl? Also, what about the protective gear regarding radiation and so on?

I'm planning a similar trip in the relatively near future.

As I understand it, radiation levels in Chernobyl vary from area to area and are within acceptable boundaries in open areas and many buildings. My guess is you don't need any protective gear; all you need is a Geiger counter, so you can tell which locations are safe.

We organised our trip through New Logic. They handled all the permissions etc, all you have to do is to contact them early on so they can arrange things beforehand. For us, it was no hassle at all.

There was no protective gear used but the guide is good to have because the radiation indeed varies greatly even on small distances. Generally speaking moss and other foliage are potentially the most hazardous things there and you should try to keep your hands and feet off of those. On the way back there's a full body radiation check and one of us failed it because he had caught some radioactive particle on the heel of his shoe :)

Yeah, really cool...
I find it fascinating that living creatures (the moss) are the most irradiated.

Also... did you see any mutated critters... a mutated pigrat mebbe?

Heheheh, no pigrats there sorry ;)

There's supposed to be all kinds of wildlife in there, a pack of wolves and some wild horses for example but all we saw was some kittens and a dog.

The dog looked suspiciosly pregnant but it might've just as well been mutating into a centaur at the time!

You know what? Without FEV post-apocalyptic wasteland is kind of boring. I no longer like the idea of surviving a nuclear war.

Sounds like a nice trip you had. [Trivia] If you take a walnut into a power plant and walk back out again via the scans, you will fail the radiation level limit tests. This is due solely to the natural radiation given off by the walnut.[/trivia]

Which was absorbed inside a nuclear power plant in the first place, while you were inside. The same applies to a walnut placed near a cathodic monitor.

Have you heard of the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. : Shadows of Chernobyl? Its supposed to be a FPS RPG type game where you adventure through Chernobyl after a second explosion. It was supposed to come out June 30th but they pushed it back to Janurary 2nd :( it seems very promising however.

Sorry, I found out ya guys have been waiting for it to come out for awhile. I haven't found anyone so far thats even heard of it but I guess it would be likely since everyone here does love post-apoc type games ^_^.
