You see: Error

Aladar

First time out of the vault
Er, yeah. This is my first topic.. anyway, I'm only assuming this is the work of a mod. In Navarro, on the Vertibird helipad, there's a guy in Combat Armor. When I look at him, it says 'Error' in the text box. When I try to talk to him, it says something like 'Error grabbing text message' and shuts down.

This is probably a really stupid, and obvious question, but I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes down to mods.

why do you have to be like that Rosh?
the guy asks a question for help and you reply with a stupid answer.

bad form for a moderator.. if you don't have anything helpfull to say, then STFU......

anyway.. in answer to your question, it sounds like you're running the vertibird mod where you can fly the thing?
you probably havent put all the files in the right place so it can't find the .msg file that corresponds to the guy you're looking at and trying to talk to..

if it's in a .dat file ( and since i've never used the mod i don't know if it is..) then you may not be using the right mod runner..
there's mod runner, or FAME.. both of which 'should' be available on the NMA downloads section...

the third option is you managed to gt your hands on a beta or corrupt version of the mod file which is missing the .msg file, in which case, try a different site to get it from that should have a working version

Funny, I thought it was a pretty stupid question to begin with because there's no mention of the one vital aspect of the problem. Several, in fact, if you include the mod name, the mod version, other mods installed at the same time, and if this problem only exists when using a mod. The sarcastic answer might have had something to do with pointing out that the answer is just as valid because jack shit was given for background information.

If training people to expect people to do everything for them gets your rocks off, that's fine. Do that on your own forum, don't encourage it on mine. I am sorry if I do hold to Usenet tech support newsgroup standards. Don't make me waste my time guessing what kind of crap you're running and then expect me to fully troubleshoot it because "it broke".

Too bad the pertinent information was a hindsight and they made another thread, likely very related to this topic. Which also happens to be something we don't care for here, either. One topic was fine and the missing information could have been filled in. Making another topic to have two active topics in a day is fairly rude, especially given that the first topic hasn't reached the second page - which would warrant a bump if it's still a problem, or maybe another topic since the other one died. Do you encourage that as well? Was this "huggy-feely" enough for you?

Right now I can warn that only one of these topics will be on this forum when I get back later on tonight.

Sorry, did you just say something THAT stupid?

But, see, when I posted this, I had no f'ing clue WHAT the hell caused that NPC to be there. How could I give any information if I lack knowledge of why it's there?

Well, the point is that you should not ask us to spend time figuring out what mods you installed, what version you have and what NPC you are talking about. We don't read minds.

Considering that it's pretty impossible to start dicing around which permutation your code state lies in when there's about 70+ Fo2 mods alone...

I suppose that we're supposed to know which, as it was narrowed down to "a mod".

first an apolpgy to Rosh',

bad form for a moderator.. if you don't have anything helpfull to say, then STFU......

this line was supposed to be in friendly jest, the smiley, for some reason, did not get put on it...

however, my point was valid, just because his post lacks exact information on exactly what mod he's running, there's plenty of generic advice that can be given.
If you are unwilling to offer the advice or to try and help him then why bother replying with such a rediculous answswer?
if you wanted him to be more specific then why not tell him that rather than taking a sarcastic tone with him?

this IS a help forum, people come here to ask for help on mods.

ColJack, I understand that this is a help forum in part.

"I need help" or "The error light came on" isn't too helpful of the problem. It's also a given that we would have to know how you've fucked around with the base code in order to figure out what part of the code is having a problem. Zero was said about how the mods were installed, zero was said about what mods were installed. How the hell is anyone supposed to guess where their problem is except by blind luck?

And people wonder why the old salt of the forum get irked when they have to essentially teach someone how to use their own computer.

That is exactly why I put that information on the game help forum, because not enough people were following basic netiquette. I've dealt with tech support for far too long and know too many who have worked in it. If you train the customer to not have to think and just rattle off answers to if the light is on or not, then they aren't going to figure a damn thing out on their own. They don't learn how it works, and therefore I have to spend five minutes telling some low-tier utter dipshit on the phone that I have already figured out their problem and in fact just troubleshot the problem in their network before I even picked up the damn phone. I'll even be so kind as to tell them to restart a certain router and give them the router's name as well. That always tickled the low tiers into a panic, but otherwise it take an ISP three hours to find and fix that kind of problem.

Usenet is no different, and in fact it's open season for most people who don't bother to explain the problem or "learned computers" on a Mac and think everything is the same.

Now, if you enjoy wasting bandwidth as everyone plays 20 Questions to figure out the tech base for the issue at hand, that's charming. I and the others who have helped with tech support here for at least five years really dislike having to play that game. Over and over and over and over. In fact, this will have been about the fifth time I'v e made this post.

hehehehe I am a tech and thats what I have to do every day at work. Some people are really good, but others *shudder*

One guy couldn't tell the difference between a big white UPS (with the letters UPS written in red on the front) and a small black modem with red flashing lights.

Messages that say press 'ok' to continue to 'cancel' to stop seem to confusing for a lot of people as well. Then there is my personal favorite line from a user "Since you here the printer doesnt work...." implying that I/we broke the printer, regardless of the fact that you havent been to the site for six months and you were working on a completely different PC.

I lot of the problems are PEBKAC errors (Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair). On the bright side the are always a few really nice people you meet and they usauly make up for the annoying ones.

Or people who dont want to look stupid and wont tell you what they did, so instead of taking a few minutes to fix the PC it might take a few hours.

First level Techs are usally not that helpfull and I usally find its easier to play dumb than try and tell them what they need to do as that tends to startle them.

I generally dont mind putting in a little more effort with Newbie computer users a work, but sooner or later they have to at least try to learn.
