I've always been entranced with the idea of making an RPG set in darkest Africa during the 19th century, when it was only just being explored and full of legendary beasts, cannibalistic tribes and cruel slavers (well according to the Europeans). Imagine exploring the jungle, savanna and mountains while fighting slavers, animals, diseases, tribals and European explorers. The possibilities are immense! You can be an explorer, native, Arab or a member of other groups in Africa. Also, the best way to handle it is by making it historically accurate or admitting at the outset that it's supposed to be based on the romantic perceptions of Europeans at the time

What do you guys think?

Like I said in the other thread I'd love that if it was actually focused on being fun and was accurate and not just spouting some bleeding heart SJW agenda as so many games fall victim to in the current state of the industry. Theres a lot of great opportunities there in such an "non-colonized" setting in video games.

Hehehe, yeah I agree. I just love the amount of possible roleplaying opportunities. Just worried that this will never be because it won't be 'tolerable' enough.

Historically accurate rpg's suck ass and some donkey balls. If any decent African developers will ever emerge (even though Africa is a huge continent, progress is really slow in game development there) i would like to see some kind of sci-fi/fantasy rpg where you fight factions like Boko Haram. There is enough crazy shit going in Africa to get inspiration for a bunch of games, without having to introduce other cultures.

Historically accurate RPGs exist?

there's more story and history in africa than that. African civilization is such underrated that it doesnt deserve for all the glories it had in the past. Garamantes for example, is one of civilization that known for irigating sahara. There is also Mali empire and nubian from lower egypt. The later capable for resisting even mighty persian invasion due to their unique military tradition. Poor african Could came from the fact that this land used to be a place where major enslavement take place. Yeah its sad thing that when people think about africa what they came with is only religious extremist and slavery.

Edit: And i haven't talked about aksumite kingdom or pre-modern Nigeria (including the cultures of Benin, Ife, and Igbo-Ukwu) that produced some of the most realistic and impressive metallic art in the world, which I think could compare to that of Greece or Rome. There's so much possible setting that based on africa other than colonial one

Europa Universalis allows for some pre-colony attempts at colonizing Africa

It also allows for a rare and fun oportunity to play these kingdoms, although they are quite simplistic and difficult to play in the game. Same goes for Mesoamerican cultures, which I loved to play, even if it led absolutely nowhere. I loved, I guess, the oportunity to play them, more than actually playing them

I'm probably gonna come off as some un-racist bleeding heart SJW pinko here, but one could for example try to play as African countries withstanding colonialism, as only one nation there ever did, Ethiopia (it's a fun piece of history by the way. The Italians couldn't believe they were losing to black people, litterally, and kept sending troops to die there out of sheer refusal to accept the situation. FUN!)

Ah so another game with whitey as the bad guy.
Simply Epic. Literally

"You are killing black people in a game set in Africa you racist fucks!" /People regarding Resident evil 5 :P
To be honest they did the same thing with Spanish peasants in Re4. It wasn't racist purposefully, but them portraying a despecting caricature of Spain most of the world had by then, where crazy religious peasants wanted to impale you even out of the T-Whatever Virus was pretty bad. Besides, becouse Capcom being retards as always, Spanish people talked like Latin Americans, unspecified country.
But it shouldn't "be racist" but for us, most people probably doesn't even aknowledge these things.

And i haven't even played it, but have a vague idea from Let's Plays. Who knows which more wrong and annoying details are there

It could be like a reverse (not so much) Fallout 2 :D. I don't even have to eleaborate, just think a bit! Thrown in like a newborn to this new land with a very vague and wrong knowledge of it, to discover all the tribes and cultures out there to find. Spice it up with magic and folklore and it could be pretty rad. You could NOT kill black people, that'd be a point of that kind of RPG.

It would be kinda fun to have a game set in the Ashanti Empire or one of the other african empires.

No, no, I get it, that's why I got all preemptive to begin with.
You want a game where you destroy blackie, and laugh while doing it. I get it, nothing wrong with that.

I will now go hang my head in shame, for wanting one game, one game ever, where you can play an African country.

Sieg Heil!

I'd prefer it'd be more balanced in it's portrayal than go the "noble savage" route of the natives being totally misunderstood peace loving hippies who wow really make you think

Understandable, with all the games out there, where you play "noble savage" blackies. Sigh, I'm so sick of these pro-African games. It's time for a change! Time for good old slavery game! Make America Great again!

Why colonial era? I'd play any historically accurate African RPG created by African game studio, provided the game is a piece of true craftsmanship programmed from scratch, with great ethno music and jungle fauna sound, not some crappy makeshift vaporware assembled in RPG maker in two weeks. Heck, I don't need any white heroes there, let me play ruthless African warlord as long as the combat system is turn-based with complex enough rules! (ISO/top-down plox, preferably with nice pre-rendered 2D background, and good system resource managemet in mind. Just make it raw and as politically incorrect as it gets, thanks.)

How about instead of the generic "evil colonial opressors" story we've seen either literally or in fantasy settings throughout all mediums of entertainment, its an RPG that shows the good and the bad of (and lets you play as) both sides. Sorry you don't understand subtletly and jump to conclusions. Clearly because I don't want all the Whites to be generic super villains and I don't want the blacks to be generic mary sues who do no wrong and instead prefer a balanced portrayal of both, I want a game about lynching blacks. Also this is relevent to the American slave trade and Donald Trump...somehow....? Did you have a stroke or something? We're talking about a potential RPG in darkest Africa, pay attention and try not to sperg the fuck out again.
