Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an upcoming CRPG developed and published by Larian Studios, the sequel to 2014's Divinity: Original Sin. It is set to be released for microsoft windows in December 2016. the developer seems to take same approach as firaxis do, improving the gameplay and experience aspect on pc version while also confirm that console version is possible.

in previous games, you create two player character and role play with them. now, the sequel allow you to roleplay up to 4 character at once, including of designing the abilities as well establish relationship that affect how character react with each other. the campaign also feature co-op mode, with any important choice in campaign will be decided with social battle of each character (roshambo anyone?)

with christ avellone joining the developtmen, this could be another best crpg of this year
anyone thoughts?

Hm, very interesting. The first game has some unusuall features like party banter and turn based combat concepts like mixing fire with oil. So the gameplay is already there and now we get the Jesus Christ Avellone himself! I wonder how much will he be involved? Because this might really turn into a classic if they have the same (or better) combat and some of that magical CA dust sprinkled on the writing and dialogues. Tis a shame that i missed that kickstarter, as it seems they are planning to release a linux version too, in a shorter timeframe then it took them to release the linux port for the first game.

We seem to be in the midst of golden age of rpg's, it's rainning with some quality shit left and right.

I'm really interested in getting this, I need to pick up the first one (which will either be PC or PS4 for me) and a sequel with the man himself involved.
Yeah, I'm all ears.

Will probably be great but seriously guys: enough with the fantasy type games already. Someone make a space/sci-fi RPG or a post-apocalyptic Fallout replacement already.

well most fantasy game that i play ussually either with grim and bleak setting or grey vs gray morality. divinity is nice fresh of lighter and softer fantasy which were line with tolkien style writing

I'm definitely excited for Divinity Original Sin 2, I just think that the fantasy genre is getting too much attention from the few RPG makers left, and they should give more attention to making a sci-fi/space RPG and a post-apocalyptic RPG.

Divinity doesn't take itself seriously and more or less satirical fantasy, so it's actually rather refreshing. But I hear you.

Anyway, I'm looking very much forward to this. I love the first game and everything new about this seems to be an improvement. It looks like they might be able to take choice and consequence to a new level. There are only two things I'm "worried" about (worried is a bit of an overstatement, but for the lack of a better word...); 1) The music. I sincerely hope the new guy can live up to Kirill's legacy; 2) While I love the ideas they have for co-op, I hope playing by myself doesn't make me miss out on parts of the game. I'm not much of a social gamer.

Well, how many big named rpgs in the last 2 years and the upcoming one are fantasy and how many are sci-fi? From the top of my head there are 6 pretty big ones that are using the futuristic themes:

Wasteland 2 (currently playing)
Fallout 4
Cyberpunk 2077
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
Shadowrun: Hong Kong
Shadowrun: Dragonfall

And then a games somewhat close to an rpg, like Xcom 2.

I wouldn't call that starving for attention.

oh you dont start it again .... :3

I am not arguing their merits as rpgs, but that the theme is not lacking attention all that much. As for real classic rpgs, well there aren't all that many of them regardless of the theme (still a big number compared to the 2002-2012~ drought).

Well first off Fallout 4 and Borderlands ARE NOT RPG's.

Cyberpunk isn't even coming out this year, but that is exactly what I'm looking for in an RPG setting now. Fantasy is saturated and needs a rest.

In contrast fantasy is getting Pillars of Eternity, Witcher 3, Torment: Tides of Numenara, Age of Decadence, and more. The first 3 of those are from big name developers like CD Projekt, InXile, and Obsidian.

Obsidian is now making Tyranny which is great but still looks like a fantasy setting, and I wish they would take a break from fantasy and make a sci-fi or post-apocalyptic RPG because there are none right now. InXile should hopefully be doing something with Wasteland 3 sooner than later instead of focusing on more fantasy settings once Torment is finished, but instead I think they are doing Bard's Tale which is yet another fantasy type setting.

So unless you actually are counting Fallout 4 and Borderlands as RPG's then yes this is a genre that is hurting for attention. Fantasy is saturated, and it needs a rest.

What is saturation to you? We are getting a lot of good fantasy rpg games if we compare that to the mid to late 2000', but can you even count to 10 in your list? With your definition of an rpg, there are not that many of them and any great rpg should be welcomed regardless of its setting. Besides, if there is anything Troment showed us, is that a fantasy setting does not need to be another lifeless tolkienesque turd.

Bottom line is Obsidian has put out Pillars of Eternity and is now doing Tyranny, CD Projekt made Witcher 3, and InXile is currently doing Torment AND Bard's Tale. I want a post apocalyptic and sci-fi RPG from these developers. The genre of Fantasy is getting tired for me, not just in games but in other media like television (Game of Thrones).

And while I love Endless Legend (a fantasy 4X strategy game), I am much more excited for Amplitudes Endless Space 2.

I simply think it's time for these particular studios to give us something other than the fantasy genre. There really isn't a single space-based RPG, like a top-down isometric cRPG set in space.

The possibilities are nearly endless: a zombie RPG hasn't been done well either. ANYTHING but more of the fantasy genre. Of course, I'm still going to play Torment, Divinity and Tyranny.

Ugh, it's gonna be hard to stay away from the Early Access. I'd love to help out finding bugs and can't wait to play the game, but I also don't want to spoil my first experience.

Also, god damn I love Larian and Sven. Such a great attitude and energy, you can tell they do this with great passion.

Well i couldnt stand the first one (dreadful looting, too much combat which get far too repetitive for me, an ever so boring "save the world" story, various other shittily designed mechanics) so a second one aint all too interesting to me. Im also pretty damn tired of fantasy games so even if they improved upon the flaws of the first one id still wait for it to drop to like 5 euro on a sale.

i mean its your choice. i'm too bored to death with grimdark low fantasy setting with copycat mechanic of aged infinity engine :)

i'm looking forward for a CRPG that utilize the today's computing technology as a proper port of PnP experience

I liked the first game a lot. While lacking in story and character writing, it was a fun experience of circumnavigating difficult encounters with tactics, skill and the appropriate barrel. With MCA working on the writing (and hopefully having a significant role in it), this game could fix all that by potentially have a story that deconstructs the fantasy genre as a whole (or at least have some interesting writing). The gameplay improvements also seem promising.

Overall, I'm excited for this game though it would probably be a while before it comes out. Until then, here is something borrowed from the Codex:
