Guides for new companion Combat Control?

First time out of the vault
Hi all,

I've been struggling recently to get the Combat Control to work properly for a new companion NPC. I'm not sure I fully grasp how AI.txt, NPC Protos, and Party.txt interact to provide those options.

I've tried searching the various pinned guides here as well as the Fallout Mods wiki, and also had no luck searching old threads. Does anyone know of any existing threads or videos / documents anywhere that go in to depth on how to get this to work?

I wouldn't be quite sure how to make a new entry in AI.txt properly so I've been trying to get an existing AI packet working. In the mapper I assign my new companion critter the Party Sulik Custom AI just to test, but when selecting Combat Control, all the buttons are greyed out. Even though it's greyed out, Custom can be clicked but all options available under it are greyed out and unselectable.

Any help would be much appreciated, and thanks in advance!

Find the latest information about ai.txt here. Specifically important is the note:
The combat ai-mode types for party members must always be in the above shown order, and the character must always start out in the CUSTOM-mode, otherwise the game will not be able to correctly detect the set ai-mode.
If the ai packages aren't in correct order, the game will not be able to pick the correct one if you change them via Combat Control.

Regarding your issue - For Combat Control to work you have to setup a correct entry in the party.txt file. If all your buttons are greyed out, it means the entry is missing or something is wrong with it, as the game doesn't know which modes are supposed to be available.

Ah, that was fast! Thank you so much. That dapper kitty always heralds good things : )

After further investigation, I had a PID for a different custom critter in my companion's party.txt entry by accident. After fixing that, the Combat Controls now work! Thanks again.
