The Five Kings were together in this charge old but still warriors (both armies so poor that bullets and modern weaponry were now rare) along with their sons in the Black Rice they slayed many a white man and as they were overwhelmed took pride in their success for the white man expended so much blood in this conquest that the black race was safe and would return in power.

This film is an epic in the classical sense of the word and is a truly monumental achievement for Spike Lee. At the height of his powers here his characters ooze emotion and the film has such a profound sense of pride and honor in the first half that slowly and horrifyingly decays into a sense of fatalism. Echoing the history of an oppressed people.

At the premiere white allies gave all 4000 of the Black actors and extras foot baths and for the women a special toe-sucking afterwards.
