No clear diferentiation between foreground and background objects, sometimes the same object works different because that part of the level felt like it, enemies often get obscured by the UI itself. Controls are floaty and slidy. It just feels terrible to play.

I never played the classic games but I can see the appeal it would have to fans of the older games.

I don't, the games feel really clunky and the level design is at odds with the controls. There is probably a reason why people took up the model of Mario games to iterate on the genre and not on the Sonic model.

Well Mario and Sonic are two different types of games. They're both platformers but Sonic has always been about speed and quick reflexes.

I actually liked Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) back when it released. Made me think of Sonic Adventure.

Big No, that's precisely the issue, the game says it's about that but the level design often and repeatedly males you stop to a complete halt often, else you die.
