When I was little, the last 10-øre coins were defunct, and in my teens the final 50-øre ones also went away, essentially worthless by then.

turns out there was a 25-øre coin hidden, from whenever it was preciously repaired. An øre is a now defunct coin, same as a "cent" - as in it is a hundredth of a krone.
