Games that lock content behind any wall, (pay wall or "Find someone who owns the game to trade this pokemon so it can evolve") are ridiculous. I paid for the game but can't access all the content in it unless I go to extra effort? Also pokemons that are version locked, so Nintendo sells one game as two. Those are in the game, but inaccessible unless you trade them from a different version.
I have a facebook but only have my close family in there because it's the easier way of keeping in touch with them since I literally live in the opposite side of the planet. But they don't play videogames because they are rural country farmers reaching the age of retirement.
I still don't remember how I got an Alakazam during my Diamond playthrough. I was lucky and managed to get two DSes and a copy of Pearl, so I'm pretty sure I just traded my Kadabra over to Pearl and then back again.
This would all "fixed" if the game had NPCs that trade pokemons to allow the player to get those final evolution only by trading ones.
I remember that the games used to have NPCs that wanted to trade specific pokemons for some rare ones back in the day. All they needed to do was make a place in the game where you could do that without the need for another human or having two consoles and games.
In a mostly single player game. It is blocking people from accessing the full content of the game, no matter how you put it.
Is it so hard to understand that not everyone who likes the games are social people? Actually I bet there are many of them that are introverted, shy and/or social anxious and just want to enjoy the game by themselves.
The longevity of Pokemon games lies in the multiplayer element, and all Japanese games always have social elements to combat Hikkikomori tendencies. I think it's a good thing to include in games, specially on games directed at children.
But why lock it from getting it in the game? If a player wants the pokemon sooner than they can trade, but if he don't want to socialize then allow him to get it other way. Even if it is after game end or something.
Although in tournaments most players are young adults...
It's not locked, you just have to walk up to someone or post it on facebook and you will get it. If they don't want to socialize then tough tities I say.
You really don't know what social anxiety is... People can't just walk up to someone or post on facebook...
Hell, you want another solution? Make a site that allows players to connect and trade pokemons with a "virtual trainer", not a real person.
They don't do that because they are trying to make people become more competitive and so for them to get the last evolution/shiny on some pokemons. So they go to more tournaments (which one has to pay).
Also, again, none of this applies to Gen V or earlier. There, if you don't have IRL friends who also like those specific games, you're screwed. Period. It also doesn't apply to those using emulators or the Virtual Console, because again, no Wi-Fi trading.
