It's hilarious how they are back to taking the games' story super seriously. I thought they abandoned that boat with Colors. Still from what I've seen I don't understand why it's getting so shat upon so much seems pretty okay.
I'm pretty sure the story was written by two different groups of writers. There's the one that wanted a super grimdark and edgy story to bring Sonic back to his SatAM roots and there was the group that wanted to have fun and have witty dialogue.
I'd love a game that could adapt a SatAM-styled story into the modern gaming landscape, but Sonic Forces the writers to compromise and it's just coming off lame.
In the 90's there were two Sonic cartoons with radically different tone and style running at the same time. One was a low budget Slapstick cartoon the other was a slightly higher budget Adventure show about anthro animals fighting Eggman's empire.
I personally like Sonic Boom the most. It has some pretty damn good writing (though not every episode is exactly an instant classic) and the voice acting is absolutely great for all the main characters (though some of the side characters are a bit... bad.)
I liked the Sonic Boom episode where the Sonic Twitter account says that Sonichu will be a playable character in Fire & Ice, but he'll have blue arms, three scarves and will ultimately be a reskin of Big the Cat.
