What they see? Hmmm.... well, the first (and the most obvious) thing that comes to mind is the run-of-the-mill desert. It's a post nuclear war, what's there to see? Sand, rocks, a snake and mountains. And if you wan't to, you can add a vanishing policebooth, like the one in Fallout 1.

Don't forget old craters every ten miles.
You might see green glassy substance every now and then. That's "trinitite" - baked sand from the nuclear explosions.

Well, uh, thanks thanks so far. Then I was right...

Then another question:
How can I make the landscape not THAT boring? If there is everywhere the same rocks in the same sands, my players will get bored (Perhaps even bored to death). Or is it just that which causes the typical Fallout atmosphere?

Hmmm, now that I am thinking about it, it turns out to be a good idea.

But there just can't be a desert everywhere you look, no matter where you standing...

Just think about it, the sand that goes in a great contrast with the sky and sun, the feeling of being alone, there is a snake crawling back into its cave, a radscorpion is running over the hot, burning sunbathed sand.....in your desperate search for water, you fail to find enough to cleanse your throat, you have died, and not even the carrion eaters are interested in your radiated corpse...

Maybe you should pick another setting, if Fallout bores you.

You could also imagine occasional abandoned caravans or other signs of human passing, probably with accompanying skeletons. After all, if your character is walking through these areas alone and surviving it's easy to think that other people might have passed that way while fleeing from the cities or otherwise traveling back and forth.

Err... Divinech did mention that telling him the view would be like a location in the United States would be meaningless.

If you are able, try to see the movie Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. That is the best movie that conveys the environment of Fallout.

Now, it is an arid desert. The only plant-life is far in the distance, or scrub which is bent and discolored in it's constant struggle for survival. The colors of life has been drained from the land, everything is distorted by the dust which is prevalent. Scattered around the wasteland are the remains of humanity at it's peak. Metals have rusted, buildings have crumbled, but have not yet disappeared from the Earth. Cars litter the landscape, testament to people trying to escape fate, and immobile buildings lose a war of attrition against the elements.

Here's an image, by Shabaev Mike (Render.ru) which might help you a bit.

@Jabbapop:
Yes, I have played the game. But no, I can't remember any pictures that might help (Except perhaps the screen after your death). So perhaps you could help me to locate these pictures.

Your way of responding isn't helping...

I pity your players. A DM without imagination and passion for research must truly suck.

There are some pictures in .frm format in the directory called 'backgrnd' for Fallout 2. Does anyone know what these are for? Loading?

You'll have to extract and convert the files with datman and FRM converter first, but they might be useful.

I wonder if imagination is hereditary, or if it can improve with experience? As a GM, I make up most everything on the fly, but general knowledge can always be further supplemented with good research.

Now, without actually extracting the files (and they are not interesting enough to keep around unextracted). I believe those files are the art for the backgrounds behind the talking heads.

Ah yes. I think you're right.

Bit strange having some of them in 2 though. I don't remember some of them, such as 'wasteland', which was nice. Maybe they just got included anyway.

Don't forget a post-apocalyptic world would likely be permeated with remnants of the pre-war civilization. Ruined skyscrapers, old bridges, broken power lines, rusted vehicles... It's unlikely everything would be just sandy desert. It's USA, after all.

P.S. APTYP is right. Maybe you should have someone else take your place as a DM, since your imagination obviously decided to go on a vacation.

Well thanks so far...

And I think I've got enough information about the world. It would be nice if you keep replying, but it isn't necessary.

At all who think I'm a bad DM:
Go back to the dark corner you came from and die. (I don't wanna justify myself...)

At all who helped me:
Thanks!! At first I wasn't sure if it was a good or bad idea to ask this community, but at least you showed me that it was a good idea. Again thanks!
