2006. A better year for RPG's

Wow, some great "RPGs" you've listed there
/sarcasm.

The only game I'm remotely interested in on your "RPG" list is Hellgate: London and only because ex-Blizzard employees are working on it. Not that Diablo was a good CRPG, in fact as CRPG's go it was pretty shitty, but at least it was entertaining as a hack and slash adventure.

Of the "CRPGs" you named, the only ones that even remotely interest me are Dragon Age and NWN 2. Dragon Age because it is the first BioWare RPG that doesn't have a trendy license and thus will need to have genuine quality to compensate for absence of hype which surrounded their previous releases, and NWN 2 because it has Avellone and a good portion of the BIS crew working on it, so it will likely be better than the overhyped piece of shit that was the original NWN. I don't give a shit about Hellgate: London and TES IV: Oblivion. Hellgate is just an idiotic shooter, and everything I heard about Oblivion indicates that it will be another milestone in befoulment of the series - the first milestone being, of course, Morrowind.

BioShock - Spiritual sequel to System Shock. RPG Shooter.

Irrational Software's offices are just a short subway ride away from where I live. I keep meaning to see if I can take a tour and get a sneak preview of Bioshock.

For the rest: Dragon Age, I don't really care about. Bioware's games don't really do too much for me, and I usually just play them because rpg's are so scarce. I like their company in a lot of ways but their games are just too simple, and besides that I want to play a game, not watch a game that plays itself for me and occasionally requires my input.

Hellgate, I don't know too much about. The setting sounds interesting, but when I heard "Diablo" mentioned I stopped paying attention.

Oblivion, I'm really looking forward to. Unlike most people here I had a lot of fun with Morrowind. The dialogue system sucked, frankly, and the rpg elements were lacking, but I really like exploring in games and Morrowind had a huge, immersive world to explore and was completely free-form, and it took a long time for it to feel repetitive or boring for me. I can't defend it from any of the complaints people make about it but I really enjoyed it.

Neverwinter Nights 2, I'm not sure about. I'm sure that Obsidian can do something interesting with it as long as it doesn't get rushed out like KOTOR2, but on the other hand I didn't really enjoy NWN that much - I hate Real-Time-With-Pause and Bioware's trademark "look, no hands!" approach to combat, and the original game and the first expansion were kind of lame. I did manage to have fun with it in places though, mainly in the HOTU expansion. The online play was a great idea, especially when people started making persistent worlds, but it didn't really work for me either - every time I tried to play with people it was just the typical internet stuff all over again - griefers, treadmillers, the clueless and/or indecisive, gimmicks, etc. I think I would have loved it if any of my friends were into PC gaming and we could all play it together, but since that's not the case NWN is kind of 'meh' for me, so I feel like no matter what Obsidian does NWN2 is going to be the same.

So, to sum up my feelings: I really, really wish Troika was still around.

Yeah I said those were "great" games. Read the post dipshit.

The reason I posted this is because pc gamers haven't seen much Rpgs in the last 2 years.

2004-2005 RPG's even worth mentioning:
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
Fable: The Lost Chapters
Dungeon Siege II
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

None of those game were really all that good.

TES:Morrowind could barely even be called an CRPG for it's lack of content and I don't even want to recall NWN. Thus their sequels incur little excitement in me. They don't deserve to be on a CRPG list in all honesty.

If the developers put out something worth buying I may pick them up, although I doubt they will judging by the success of both TES:Morrowind and NWN. They're not going to mess with that formula too much.

EDIT: Oh, I'm interested in BioShock as well, perhaps the only game on the list that I'm expecting something special out of.

The website is absolutely AWFUL (the whole Flash thing is just an intro and a repulsive mystery meat equivalent of the tiny navigation below it), but the game looks interesting -- if you can judge it by the Flash intro and the screenshots.

There's a video showing a presentation of the game circling somewhere around on the net - you should really google it. It left me drooling for sure.

Looks great, eh?

Now let's just hope they implement everything correctly, actually finish this game before they ship it, and don't dumb it down.

It's distributed by EA, though, which makes me fear the worst.

True, but if they stick to it, it'll be absolutely innovative.

It looked pretty polished...

But then again, so did S.T.A.L.K.E.R. -- more than a year ago.

Ye of little faith, the video itself is some evidence of what has been accomplished. A far cry from only having press releases and previews claiming "revolutionary gameplay."

Spore certainly looks like the brightest star on the horizon.

By the way, seems that Will Wright is really a fount of Care Bear knowledge.

As long as we are on the topic of 2006 RPGs, someone should really mention Gothic III (with a little luck). Might be the only decent RPG of 2006.

A great list of 2006 games at IGN (if you don't mind narrow viewpoints and hype-fed choices).

No problem mate, this is going to truly be my highlight of this year. Will be pre ordering it the minute Play.Com allows me to.

I've got this feeling it will be a very demanding game in terms of hardware though... What with all the stuff your computer has to do... Which sucks because my comp's old and my wallet's empty.

I'm quite looking forward to gothic 3 myself. I obtained gothic 1 and had an awesome time playing that, despite the huge ammount of glitches. Haven'[t been able to track down gothic 2 though
