GameBanshee is promoting a new feature called Fallout Revisited, which will be spread over three days, covering, you guessed it, Fallout. The first day seems to focus on its predecessor Wasteland and its would-be inheritor Fallout: Tactics. A bit from the Wasteland interview:
GB: In your opinion, what was it about Wasteland that made it such a great RPG?

Ken: Great story from great storytellers including Liz Danforth, Mike Stackpole, Dan Carver, Brian Fargo, and myself. Great programming from Alan Pavlish and team. Decent art from Todd considering the time. All of it based on a great game engine--the Tunnels and Trolls mechanics underlie the whole Wasteland skills and combat system.

GB: Do you consider Fallout to be the spiritual successor to Wasteland? Why or why not?

Ken: No opinion. I never played Fallout.
We'll keep you guys posted.

That's upsetting, Per. I'm sure it was great guide. Maybe he was just nervous.

A few months into the development process, myself, the lead programmer Karl and our producer at the time went with John DeMargheriti (head of Micro Forte) to visit Interplay and discuss the project. Only once we got there did John realize how violent Fallout was – and John didn’t like violence. So the night before we meet Interplay, it’s suddenly starting to sound like the whole thing will fall through. Keep in mind that contracts have been signed, staffing plans submitted and recruitment begun. Anyway, the meeting went ahead, and somehow the project kept going (although it was because of this meeting that children were removed from the game).

Ed Orman said:
Ed: From a designer’s perspective, I’d have to say the implementation of Continuous Turn Based mode. It was totally experimental, but I still think it was a reasonable solution to bringing a turn-based game to a real time audience, part of what Interplay had asked us to do.

Two different examples of how a project is skullfucked by clueless people...

What are the chances that Bethesda is driving this look into the previous Fallout games as a means of generating interest in the new game. Maybe I'm doing Game Banshee a disservice, but the timing seems about right.

and Bethesda totally works for me. Oblivion kicked a great deal of ass.

GB: Why do you suppose Interplay retained the rights to any massively multiplayer Fallout titles? Do you think we'll ever see such a game, and if so, would a Fallout MMORPG even work?

Chris: I have no idea, but I think it would totally work, though.

M'kay...

I wonder what they have in stock for Part 3...

go MCA go!

Jesus.

This is supposed to be 3 Days of Fallout, right? So how come two days have passed and so far they only interviewed a bunch of people who either had nothing to do with Fallout or are partially responsible for its downfall?

As for MCA's ramblings:

execl( "roshambo", "-rantmode", NULL );
Seriously, what's up with that nonsense about Fallout MMO? He sounds like a 16-year-old kid who entered the CRPG production yesterday and not someone who spent good seven years working for a highly esteemed CRPG developer.

While Bethesda's version has been unaffectionately referred to as "Morrowind with guns", the critical acclaim received by The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in early 2006 may have helped suppress some fears.

Mmmh...How come that nobody here feels reassured and confident now that Oblivion has received such a big critical acclaim ? ( "teh best game ever" )

Because Oblivion is a worthless piece of dung. If a worthless piece of dung receives big critical acclaim, then why should BethSoft bother to develop a Fallout 3 that *isn't* a worthless piece of dung?

Just in case : I'm not reassured either ;)
Sometimes I try to convince myself that Oblivion is not THAT bad, I install it, play through it for like twelve minutes, throw up all over my room and remove that piece of crap of my hard drive. Can't even tell y'all how disappointed I was by this..."game"

i was co-admin of an oblivion forum until i've played it - it's really too bad, and i think beth is going to prepare a second desaster now - Fallout3.

Ken: No opinion. I never played Fallout
can't believe it - why this 'expert' is babbling in '3 days of Fallout' ?

To everyone here that was saying that Oblivions sucks: You're absolutely right. If Oblivion was supposed to show us what BethSoft could do with story and dialog, then BethSoft blew it.

Frankly, I don't think we'll ever see another game like Fallout. It was unique. Even Fallout 2 did not shine as brightly as Fallout did.
