So, here is how it went.

A recent issue of Playboy offered for "free" a pair of 3D glasses. Your garden variety red-cyan 3D glasses. And I thought, hey... I don't "read" that imbecilic magazine but I never used a pair of those before so why I shouldn't spend 4$ on something completely useless?
And as it often happens, my instincts got the best of me and crushed it to bits and I bought the magazine.
I go home very happy that I can finally see for myself what the hell is it with these 3D glasses... and lo and behold... I can't see a damn thing. Now, I understand that you can't provide a real 3D effect from a 2d picture... but come on. I tried dozens of them and the only difference when I put the glasses on is that I see the image clear. Well, thank you, but wouldn't have been easier to print the image clear in the first place?

And also thank you Playboy for the headache this got me.

Now, the default question: Is there something I do wrong? Do I have to actually believe they're 3D in order to see them 3D?

The 3d glasses work in a 3d cinema. Or maybe a picture is doubled in print, each lens of the glasses blocks one colour of the print. If the prints are apart from each other, the composed image should be 3d. Another way to create this 3d effect is to use polarized lens, but how to obtain this effect in print is beyond me...

take a red pen and a green pen, put them both in the same hand at once and paint something on a paper. put the glasses on and behold.

I saw an episode of Futurama once that was kind of like this. How many eyes do you have?

These glasses obviously only work with pictures/movies made specifically for them. They work by having the left and right eye see slightly different images (in one eye you don't see the red details, in the other eye you don't see the green (or whatever colour they chose) details) thereby giving the illusion of 3D.

That reminds me of my inability to see magic eye images.

All I can get from them is splitting headaches and the urge to burn things.

They never worked for me. I only have one functioning eye.
Well it moves and looks normal, just can't focus. Too many concussions I think...

They work, I've done it before, but its only a minor uillusion, like those pictures you look at until you can see the image
