I have a new Athlon 1.2 ghz computer and have become interested in creating 3-dimensional graphics. Anyone have software they would reccommend? The only 3D software I've used to date is AutoCad 2000, but I want to get out of drafting and into 'sculpting'. Obviously, system requirements are not a problem. I'm willing to spend up to about $400.

Industrial strength 3D programs cost about $3,000 or so, like Autocad does. However there's a pretty cool 3D program called Amorphium which you can find at http://www.amorphium.com/, it's about in your price range. You may also try Bryce 4+ because it can do some pretty spectacular graphic in 3D.

If you need a real 3D modelling program you should go for something like 3D Studio Max or Lightwave, both of which are very expensive.

3D Studio Max or Amorphium, or Bryce, what?

Plus, I can just see it using Win98:

"Ah, just one more rotation and my model is finished.. What the..? Fatal exception in memory address 0CE1:23CB? What the hell does that mean...?" *clicks escape* "What the fuck? My keyboard isn't working... piece of shit! DAMMIT TO HELL, I WORKED FOUR FUCKING HOURS ON THAT!!!! FUCK YOU WINDOWS, FUCK YOU BILL GATES. DAMN IT TO HELL!!!!"

Heh, that sounds about right, Xotor.

I'd personally go with 3D Studio Max. There's so much you can do with it, and you don't have to shell out big bucks unless you're going to actually use it publicly, like for advertising. It's around $200 for a something-or-other version, which I have.

Still, honestly, I doubt that even half the people on these boards buy programs like that.
I'm sure a lot of you have Photoshop (I do...), but how many have paid $500 for it?

Let's see, the only real software I bought, or rather my company bought, was Flash 4 and Flash 5. No wait.. I got Wordperfect for $50.. and a backup program for $50.

Aside from games and the above software, I haven't bought any software on my computer, including my Operating system.

BTW.. I need a copy of Win2000Pro... hmm..

Buy... Software? Hmmm what an entertaining idea....

Games on the other hand...

Still using Win98? You poor, poor man.

I'm using it too. I didn't want to install win2k although I have the cd (burnt or not burnt? Go figure that out :-) ). Some of my programs won't run on it, plus a few games. Also, it has no real dos prompt anymore, only an emulated one. Dos is for real men ;-)

I tested out the Win2k DOS prompt on a friend's machine with a DOS program I created using DJGPP, and it worked. I wasn't expecting that, especially since it was one I compiled myself.

I'm just looking for better stability. Most of the newer games will run on Win2k just fine.
