5mm

The 5mm round was in all likelyhood what became the standard infantry assault rifle ammunition instead of our worlds 5.56 NATO rounds. Seeing as all the first games "assault" type weapons use it, while the .223 still remained fairly popular amongst the civilians of the world..

Also, as a note, while the 5.56 and other rounds of the type (5mm included) are not large, they will do nasty things once hitting flesh, even with a FMJ, that is another reason why armed forces have gone to them. (armed forces are forced to use FMJ by treaty.)

Technically they dont have to user FMJ, they just cant use expanding bullets. For example, they could use solid copper, bronze or solid zinc as well as FMJ. FMJ is just cheaper

Wasn't the argument more about them being easier to fire, control and use? 7.62mm full-size NATO rounds had a problem of being too powerful and making guns hard to control in full auto, while running the risk of over-penetrating.

Also weight. You can carry a hell of a lot more 5.56 ammo than 7.62, twice as much to be more precise.
