99 Awesome screenshots from the Wasteland

Man, this game is fugly most times. Half-life 2 looks better than that. Doesn't hold up to competition like Far cry 2 or Crysis. In fact, it only beats World of Goo graphically. And that's barely, as the latter is more stylish.

Animations are 80% shit, 20% good. Some textures are obviously too low quality, with stark difference to HQ textures for, say, weapons. Also, floating characters and objects, and frozen facial animations are pretty much unforgivable. But yes, FO3 can look pretty at times, especially the outdoors. The indoors is meh.

You're right. I think my statement wasn't very accurate. Animations still need work.

I post a few of my own stills. Not very exciting, but you get a good idea of how neat the game can be:

Well, I say.. on a technic part, the Fallout 3 graphic is pretty bad. But still, there are also some pretty good moments in the game. I made some screens by myself too and they look good, imo.

Also I have to say, that I like the most buildings for what they are.

This is an artistic issue and changes person to person but without knowing the game if I'd see these screens I'd say it's a decent game from 2006.

It doesn't look good at all, (beside of some scenery, and they look good just because of heavy lightning and blooms covers bad textures).

On the other hand pip-boy in the game and in these screens looks really good.

- I mean come on! just look at the texture and the polygons in brahmin (specially stomach).

Even the animations are superb, unlike Morrowind.

IMHO animations are utterly crap, Comparing F3 with Morrowind doesn't make sense, compare with Far Cry 2 (see an HD video of it - or play) and then you will know how terrible animations are -I think this is mainly because of Bethesda doesn't do motion capture and use old school animation + bad animators.

I'm not saying all of the GFX is bad. It's largely the animations that ruin the feel, as well as copypaste rubble or terrain - a lot of bridges look exactly the same, not to mention the subways or building interiors...

Also, another thing that I notice is stuff like screenshot3 - the LQ closeup textures. You can kind of see how much better the Character's hand looks than the table. It gets worse for more detailed objects, especially with pictures or text. Since I'm assuming you're playing on high and still getting that, it's pretty much improper to call game GFX 'superb' like many reviews do. It's got its moments, but I honestly felt that, say, Witcher looked better.

I thought I'd finally have some privacy when I left the Vault, but nooo...

VDSG Tip #2134: Due to persistent background radiation in the wasteland, you may encounter outlandish mutations. Try not to photograph them when the subjects can see you.

Just out of the blue, here are some screenies of my current char. Points to anyone who notices something a little.. different with my character(Shouldn't be hard). : p

Look out, he's a ninja!

... But sometimes desperate times call for.. extreme measures.

Now if only someone could make a mod so you don't get the annoying 'you can't use that' message when playing this way..

This post just made me realize that I have to revoke my previous statement... they didn't get rid of the ever so annoying fish-eye perspective... Most of the time it's unnoticable, and whilst playing I didn't notice it, but some of these screens have the perspective so off that it's just incredible... And it especially pisses me off seeing how Half life and other 3d games have had the perspective right for almost a DECADE now! I mean WTF?

FUrther issues...

Toes... did everyone mutate into having uniform toeless feet?

Colors... mostly look like shit... no offense but creating a heavp of junk that is PURE grey and no other colour just looks lazy to me... even in a collapsed aluminium structure there would be rusty bolts and spots of brown where rust leaks onto the aluminium...

Shadows have been done, animations have been done so I won't comment...

Objects... what's with a plate not breaking after it hits the wall? Especially after decapitating a supermutant with it? Or how come a bottle doesn't shatter from a burst of a minigun?... Sloppy sloppy design... Not to mention round objects are still octagons or other similar shapes... Just too much crap all around...

SOmething that I haven't seen anyone comment on! Weather! What the hell? Is there no radioactive rain? Or even regular or acidic rain? Storms?... I'd think after a massive nuclear holocaust where the entire earth's ecosphere gets messed up completely there'd be storms and at least acidic rain.... and a lot...

I will mention shadows anyway... no shadows at moonlight?... Weird... the lighting altogether is pretty much crap compared even to games like NWN which have been around for near a decade now!

Meh it looks okay to be honest but the points it excels in only leave you to realize what is missing....

Water... I don't knwo about you but I just can't get water to look right no matter what I do... sometimes it looks good, and then as you move, suddenly it turns into a grey pool of mist... might be somethign with my graphcards though... which would be possible since I get a similar problem in nwn1, then again HL2 looks beautiful.... so I'm not sure...

I believe you can actually adjust the fish-eyedness at startup. Or at least that's what I imagine when I see the words "angular distortion". Haven't tried mucking with it and don't normally play FPS games.

Oh man, these are nice screens. You think this looks bad? Play the 360 version, it's even worse.

I don't like bethesdas graphic style. To me it looks either hyper contrasted or over saturated or something. But regardless it's hard on your eyes and I wouldn't exactly say it's very "realistic" IMO. Whatever "Fallout" 3 is moot to me anyway.

I would never have called FO3's graphics bad.

But I did find the bloom/HDR to be totally over-done in places.

It was also weird, that you could turn left and right, and watch the sky get lighter/darker. I think that was also bloom bugging out.

Mind you, I can't remember exactly what happens when you turn to face the sun in RL. You lose some peripheral vision, right? And stuff blurs out. But the sky doesn't get brighter that I noticed.

Anyway, all I'm saying is that it gets minus points for bloom, but otherwise I thought the graphics were the least of Beth's problems.
