A new breed?

This is about a game I've played a couple of months back, Spellforce.

Now this is special, it's sort of a combination between a RPG and a RTS. You have your main char, you choose his skills, stats, the works. Now this guy/gal is a rune warrior, the soul of a warrior trapped inside a rune and who can be summoned at any time to do his master's bidding. So you are this rune servant who has been summoned by the good wizard after a great war that nearly destroyed the world. In that war rune warriors were used by some powerful wizards to fight one another and destroy the world in the process. In short you have to save what is left of the world which means.... questing!
Now the fun part is that in many missions you can't win without an army at your back. So you can summon peasants (with the right rune and a summoning monument) and build yourself a small army to take out the bad guys.
Take all this and wrap it up in a nice story, add side quests and you get Spellforce.
So, has anybody played it? Do you like the sound of it?

It was good enough for me to go through the effort of collecting all the expansions.

SpellForce 2 is much much better.

Yeah, I played that one a bit too and this time the heroes you have with you also level up and you can choose their skills wich is a great plus. I also saw the game has won quite a few awards. It's games like these that prevent me from losing all hope that the game industry will come back to it's senses and start making good games once more...

[rant] Random thought: Have any of you played Monkey Island 1&2? Do you remember how you had to figure out the password every time you started the game; you had like this huge charts, and you had to find a four digit number and only had three shots at it. For the second one you had to figure out some sort of recipe I belive... anyway getting in the game on its own gave you some sense of accomplishment... those were the days... [/ rant]

Actually, that was the copy protection. The answer to all those questions was in the manual (which you had only if you had the original game).

Dear God, I hate that stuff. Copy protection like that is the only reason I don't play Populous and Master of Orion- even after I've bought legit used copies that just don't have the manual with them.

As far as Spellforce is concerned, it did sound pretty cool, but I was wary of it after hearing of some deal-busting bugs. Commissar, is the second one that much better and worth its current (I'm guessing $50 US at retail) price tag or should I dig in the bargain bin for the first?

EDIT: I'm talking about the very first Populous, not Populous the Begining.

i didn't know populous had copy protection, wich one is that then because i know for sure that the old ones like populous, the beginning don't.

*slap*

Spelling, grammar, and punctuation, or Shut The Fuck Up.

But he is right: Populous The Beginning does not have copy protection.

Oh and Spellforce is pretty cool. Never finished it, though.

This is funny, because Populous: The Beginning is actually the newest and the last one in the series.
