A Preview of Things To Come?

Montez

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
The next issue of Game Informer magazine features an in-depth look at Bethesda's upcoming game Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and features a very impressive in-game shot on the cover. Why should Fallout fans care, you ask? Well, because it's very likely that the same engine will be used to make Fallout 3 and therefore makes a nice preview of what the graphical quality of that game will be. Give it a look-see.

Thanks to Briosafreak for the heads up and the link!

The cover appears to be PR art, not actual ingame pics, so not that intersting in itself.

However the engine and it's graphics when the artical comes out will be quite intersting.

No, it is in-game art - that's been confirmed by Bethesda employees. Maybe it was done-up a bit for the cover, but that picture is from the actual game.

I forget where I read that and when I finally find it, you beat me to it. Yep, my mind is as sharp as a wooden sword.

Anyways, I know the horse has been buried but I have this here stick in my hand and I need to beat something...isometric.

well, 'in-game art' is kind of a weird statement, is it art or in game..

anyway. moving the subject on, maybe they might follow this announcment up with a little F3 update?
Apparently that game informer magazine have screenshots, anybody able to get hold of a copy and see what we can expect Fallout3 to look like? :P

Damn, I was going to post about that.. Good work Montez and Briosa!

Guess we have to buy the new mag eh, I saw that Bethesda didn't want to see any scans of the mag anywhere..

Yeah, how touched up is it ? Looks like they took the 3D image of a guy on a horse (prehaps the HiRes master file)

It's posed by hand, but it is actual game art. The armor, horse, dude, etc. actually look that good in-game. There's a bunch of screenshots in the article, too -- you'll see.

So we're right in assuming that this game will use the same engine as Fallout 3 will ?

Posed by hand eh?
So we can expect the in game shots to have misplaced limbs and feet not touching the floor? ;)

Sounds like it.
Morrowout seems to be confirmed I guess.
Though I'd be glad to be wrong.
Just because it uses the same engine confirms nothing. It doesn't confirm a FP viewpoint, or realtime. Though both do look likely. :(
I like it when you are wrong too. :D

Hey wait, I just noticed that MrSmileyFaceDude is a Beth Dev.

What can you tell us about the expected PC requirements ?

And PLEASE (if you can, which I doubt,) tell us it'll be turn based!

It confirms that it's going to use the same engine, ie we can expect the same kind of detail level on the graphics and engine limitations or features. But yeah it doesn't confirm viewpoint or anything, I'm more interested in seeing how the graphic level is and or what kind of features this engine has.

It is a shot using real in-game assets. The guy on the cover is actually the "player character" who we use most often when we're playing the game right now. Obviously he has been posed by hand for purposes of the cover, but there is no graphics magic or sleight-of-hand going on. It is not a high-poly render or something that we're only using for cutscenes or anything like that. That is how his armor will look when you play the game. The same for the horse, his face, and the castle in the background - all in-game assets that are rendered in real time by our engine.

Found it on RPGCodex

Hehe I've seen stranger things during development ;)

But the screenshots in the article are not hand-posed. Like I said, you'll see :)

Heh, I doubt any bug would be better than the rocket launcher shooting dogmeat :p

And sounds like those screens will be sweet.

There was a bug in Galaxies beta which freaked everyone out. One day people logged in to find that their characters' looks were completely different from those picked at creation. Many great panic threads like 'My white, fat, short guy with thin eyebrows turned into a skinny black woman with massive eyebrows!' and 'My Wookie turned into some asian dude!'. They fixed the bug that caused it, but to change looks you had to make a new character...funny as hell.

That's some extreme graphics.
I guess normal maps and maybe that new alpha channel smoothing stuff that those guys from USA came out with last month?
Does the engine support rag-doll physics? And if so, will we see all these features in Fallout 3?

So many questions just because of an image.
